What is Borrelia Burgdorferi?
  • Borrelia Burgdorferi is a inflammatory disease
    that is caused a spirochete that is transferred
    from the body of a tick to the human through a
    bite.

How is Lyme Disease transmitted?
  • Lyme disease is transmitted through ticks
  • Types of ticks that spread the disease Deer
    Ticks and Western Black-Legged Ticks.
  • Location of Ticks
  • Deer Tick is in the northeastern and north
    central part of the united states.
  • Western Black-Legged tick is in the pacific coast
    by the south eastern states.

  • The human symptoms of Lyme Disease occurs in
    three stages.
  • First stage Red Rash
  • Stage two the spirochetes spread all over to
    different body tissues.

Treatment of Lyme Disease
  • Antibiotics are active in the treatment for Lyme
    disease.
  • The name of the antibiotic drug that is used
    today to treat people with Lyme disease is
    doxycycline which is a semisynthetic derivative
    of tetracycline.

Prevention of Lyme disease
  • When you have lots of tall grass and bushes
    around your house it is more likely for ticks to
    be around so if you cut them then that will
    reduce the number of ticks which will reduce your
    risk of Lyme disease.
  • You could also wear light colored clothes so that
    ticks can be spotted out easily

Vaccines of Lyme disease
  • LYMErixtm is a vaccine licensed to people with
    Lyme disease.
  • Three doses of this vaccine is prescribed by
    intramuscular injection.
  • Then a month later you take the second dose
  • The third dose will be taken twelve months after
    the first.

The History of Lyme Disease
  • In the year of 1883 a German physician reported
    the first finding of Lyme borreliosis.
  • A Swedish dermatologist, Arvid Afzelius,
    described a red rash that was found to be a tick
    bite.
  • In 1913, an Austrian physician described the
    exact same lesion.
  • In 1969, the first recorded case of ECM (erythema
    chronicum migrans) in the United States occurred
    in Wisconsin.
  • And many physicians and dermatologists began to
    see and document their findings.
