Title: Strategic Conversations

1
Strategic Conversations
  • JCC will host two breakfasts each year with
community leaders to discuss important and timely
    issues of importance.
  • These Strategic Conversations will include
issues that involve and affect our community.

2
A Quick Look at JCC Today (Winter 2008) !
  • This winter semester we have 6,233 students
enrolled, up 5 over five years ago
  • Billing contact hours broke another record, up
    18 from five years ago
  • There is a 28 increase in the number of
full-time students from five years ago

3
More demographics
  • There is a 13 increase in the number of students
enrolled under the age of 22 from 5 years ago
  • There is an 11 increase in the number of
students of color from five years ago (nearly 10
of our winter enrollment, 602 students)

4
The Statistic that causes concern
  • The largest growing area of the College is in our
Foundation Studies area (i.e., pre-college level
classes for many of our 18-19 year old students).
This requires a large investment in resources in
    an already limited budget.

5
Strategic Conversations -Barriers to Student
Success
  • Achieving the Dream and Jackson Community College
    Making a Difference

6
Achieving the Dream
  •
  • Achieving the Dream Community Colleges Count is
a multiyear national initiative to help more
    community college students succeed.
  • The initiative is particularly concerned about
student groups that traditionally have faced
    significant barriers to success, including
students of color and low-income students.
  • Achieving the Dream works on multiple fronts,
including efforts at community colleges and in
research, public engagement and public policy.
  • It emphasizes the use of data to drive change.

7
Access to Success
  • Community colleges enroll almost half of all U.S.
undergraduate students, and the American public
appreciates their commitment to providing broad
    access.
  • But access alone isnt enough. Currently fewer
than half of community college students meet
    their educational goals.
  • Achieving the Dream is working to help more
students earn certificates or degrees that open
the door to better jobs, further education, and
    greater opportunity.

8
Measures of Student Success
  • Success in Developmental Courses
  • Success in Gatekeeper Courses
  • Success in All Other Courses
  • Persistence Over Time
  • Graduation Rates

9
New Students Placing into Developmental Education
  • 60 of all new students (fall 05) placed into at
least one developmental course (reading, writing,
    and/or math)
  • Of these, 54 placed into two developmental
    education courses
  • students entering in Fall 2005 cohort

10
What does our DE student population look like?
  • Higher percentage of males, students of color and
traditional-age students (under 25) place into
    reading and writing
  • In math courses, we saw a higher percentage of
females, students of color and traditional-age
    students.

What Do We Know ?
  • We need to raise awareness of this problem and
have the courage to make changes. Doing the
    same isnt going to work.
  • As a community, we must all care about the
quality of education parents, teachers, business
    leaders and faculty

22
Next Steps
  • Information is gathered and brought back to the
core team for Achieving the Team
  • A preliminary draft of our grant will be shared
with our national coaches at the end of this
    month
  • Well keep you posted via e-mail of our progress,
    ahead of the general public.
