Title: Refresher Training Course
1Refresher Training Course
- Constructing knowledge interactively in an
IT-rich environment
2How do we construct knowledge?
- By thinking
- By collaborating
3Thinking Sharing
What do you want to achieve in this RTC? (2
minutes) Introduce yourself and share your ideas
with your group. (5 minutes)
4Thinking
- What type of thinking do we want to foster?
5Collaborating
- When ideas are shared they can lead to other
ideas. - The provision of a learning environment in which
ideas can be shared and encouraged is likely to
lead to knowledge building (KB).
6What lies ahead
- During this RTC you will have the opportunity to
think about individual and group tools to
facilitate knowledge building.
7Thinking
- We want autonomous thinkers.
- People who can think and learn independent of
other people and not be dependent on any single
resource.
8Autonomous Learner
- What are the characteristics of an autonomous
learner?
9Task (A) 10-15 minutes
- In groups of 5 identify the attributes
(characteristics) of an autonomous learner. - Each group should construct a sketch of an
autonomous learner
10Please do not look at the slides beyond this
point until advised to do so by the Instructor.

Brainstorming Lets compare your map with
ours. Is your group mainly dependent or
autonomous?
13Profile of the autonomous learner

15Creative
16Self aware
17LOgical
18Curious
19INDEPENDENT
20PERSISTENT
21CONFIDENT
22EVALUATIVE
23FLEXIBLE
24KNOWLEDGABLE
25HAS SEEKING AND RETRIEVAL SKILLS
26interdependent
27Ability to obtain information
Autonomous Learner
28Rate yourself.
29Enrichment Material Steps in Making a Concept
Map
- Write down major terms or concepts about a topic.
- Identify the most general, intermediate, and
specific concepts. - Begin drawing the concept map
- Concepts are circled
- Place the most general concepts at the top
- Place intermediate concepts below general
concepts - Put specific concepts on bottom
- Draw lines between related concepts.
- Label the lines with "linking words" to indicate
how the concepts are related. - Revise the map.

30Task
Now think of someone whom you think is a
dependent learner. Create a concept map listing
the characteristics of a dependent learner.
Are you dependent or autonomous?
