  • Storage for institutional systems data e.g.,
    LDAP (FRED, Directory), GroupWise, Cadence
    (scheduling), Signature (billing, patient
    registration), Lawson (HMC HR), Kronos (HMC
    payroll), Eclipsys (medical records, patient
    accounting), CIS (Connected), IDX (medical
    imaging).
  • General file/app storage (file servers for data,
    print servers, applications). Data files.
    Currently we have about 2.1 TB of data stored.
  • Two new Win 2000 servers added for migration and
    growth.
  • 2 TB (up to 8 TB)
  • 8 TB (aaresearch1)

  • Only available from our campus (but see Storing,
    Moving Sharing Data, below).
  • Users must login to HERSHEYMED domain for access
    from a PC. Macs must use OS 10.3 or newer and
    domain login is not required. Macs mount drive
    using SMB.
  • Excellent way to share data between PCs and
    Macs (see website for tips).
  • Get to your data from anywhere on campus.
  • User rights to shared Faculty-Lab directory are
    changed by email request to Account Management
    group.
  • Research use only, by Investigator. Departmental
    administration data, executables, print servers
    are not allowed. Not for hard drive backup.
  • Server has a capacity of 8 TB. Individual user
    limits are not currently in place.
  • Server is backed up daily.

Tools for Storing, Moving Sharing Data

  • HMC/COM Data Sharing
  • Email Unreliable Slow. Especially true for
    files gt1 MB when moving data between GroupWise
    and PSU Access Account System.
  • AAResearch1 Recommended.
  • Peer to Peer Networks Good, but not Centrally
    supported.
  • USB Keys, Zip Drives, CDs Handy, but not robust
    solution.
  • Remote Access to HMC/COM Data
  • Remote Access to HMC servers. See
    (https//access.hersheymed.net). New Remote
    system provides secure access to servers (and
    other resources( from any web browser. Requires
    epass password.
  • PSU PASS (Penn State Access Account Storage
    Space). Uses a Samba server. Login from HMC or
    PSU-UP as \\samba.cac.psu.edu\homes and use
    Access Account User ID. Everyone has 500 MB of
    space. Requires PSU-UP ISP to PSU VPN access
    from remote locations (excluding Hershey)
  • COM VPN Access. Accounts available for specific
    needs only. It requires client software on your
    computer.

  • Provides access to services and servers behind
    our firewall.
  • Does not work from a Mac.
  • URL https//access.hersheymed.net
  • Uses Epass password and requires Java plugin.
  • Can get to any server, and save paths as
    bookmarks.

Lloyd Huck Institutes, Bioinformatics Consulting

do I share my data with my collaborators? There
are two ways to go about it. When working with a
small number of people you might consider sharing
with your collaborators the access URL that we
send when you get your account (or when you
change your password). Your collaborator will be
able to log into your account up until you change
your password again. The more rigorous way to go
about it is to ask the LionDB administrators to
give access permissions to your data.

Sharing Data Globally BioCoRE A Biological
Collaborative Research Environment. Developed at
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by
the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics
Group. BioCoRE is a collaborative work
environment for biomedical research, research
management and training. A resource-centered
platform, BioCoRE offers scientists, working
together or alone, a seamless interface to a
broad range of local and remote technologies such
as discipline-specific and general tools, data,
and visualization solutions. To harness and
streamline collaborative capabilities across
temporal and physical boundaries in research and
training, BioCoRE builds on the transparent use
of and communication between technological
resources (hardware and software) and databases.
BioCoRE features powerful yet easy-to-use tools,
among them co-authoring papers and other
documents, running applications on
supercomputers, sharing molecular visualization
over the Internet, notifying project team members
of recent project changes by email, chatting,
keeping a lab book, and other practical other
practical features. BioCoRE is a freely available
collaborative environment designed for

Sharing Data Globally LionShare Under
development. See http//lionshare.its.psu.edu/ma
in/ The LionShare P2P project is an innovative
effort to facilitate legitimate file-sharing
among individuals and educational institutions
around the world. By using Peer to Peer (P2P)
technology and incorporating features such as
authentication, directory servers, and owner
controlled sharing of files, LionShare promises
secure file-sharing capabilities for the easy
exchange of image collections, video archives,
large data collections, and other types of
academic information. In addition to
authenticated file-sharing capabilities, the
developing LionShare technology will also provide
users with resources for organizing, storing, and
retrieving digital files.
