Title: Study Abroad

1
Study Abroad
  • Why? When? Where? How much?

2
Why?
  • Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and
    narrow-mindedness all foes to real
    understanding. Likewise, tolerance or broad,
wholesome charitable views of men and things
cannot be acquired by vegetating in our little
corner of the earth all ones lifetime.
  • Mark Twain

3
Why?
  • An educational opportunity outside the United
States can be among the most valuable tools for
preparing a student to participate effectively in
    an increasingly interconnected international
community that demands cross-cultural skills and
    knowledge.
  • Report of the Strategic Task Force on Education
    Abroad, 5.

4
When?
  • Although where might be the most important
question, I urge you to consider when and where
    at the same time.
  • If you plan in advance, you will be able to study
abroad and to graduate on time.

5
When?
  • Get information on study abroad on the net at
    http//studyabroad.truman.edu or at the study
abroad office in Kirk Building 114.
  • Discuss your plans with your academic advisor.

6
When?
  • If you are interested in a semester program, the
second semester of your sophomore year or the
first semester of your junior year might be the
    best time.
  • Consider summer programs.

7
Where?
  • Truman offers numerous programs around the world.
  • http//studyabroad.truman.edu

8
Summer/Interim programs
  • There are two types of Summer/Interim programs
    Faculty-led programs and traditional programs.

9
Faculty-led programs
  • Truman offers a wide range of faculty-led
programs both during the summer and during winter
    interim.

10
Traditional Summer programs
  • Truman also offers traditional summer programs.
  • The length of the programs ranges from 3 weeks to
    15 weeks.

11
Exchange programs
12
Exchange programs
  • Truman has exchange agreements with several
    partners around the world.
  • Truman is a member of ISEP (The International
    Student Exchange Program)
  • There are many advantages to exchange programs
both for the institution and for the individual
    students.

13
Exchange programs Pros
  • If you are looking for an immersion program,
    especially in non-English speaking countries,
    this is the best option.
  • In terms of cost, the price is either the same,
or very close to what it would be at Truman.

14
Exchange programs Cons
  • Very competitive.
  • Must apply early.
  • The language of education in non-English speaking
countries is the language of the country.
Therefore your level in the foreign language must
be above third-year college level in that
    language.

15
Study Abroad programs
16
Study Abroad programs Pros
  • With a few exceptions, study abroad programs can
accommodate all qualified students applying to a
    given program.
  • Most programs in non-English speaking countries
are accessible to the students regardless of
their level in the language of the country.
  • Grading system similar to the US system.

17
Study Abroad programs Cons
  • All students on these programs with a few
exceptions are US or International students.
  • Cost is based on the cost at the host institution
which is, in most cases, more expensive than at
    Truman.

18
Internships
  • Truman offers a limited number of academic
    internships abroad.

19
How much?
  • The price of study abroad programs varies greatly
depending on the type of program, the length, the
country, the location in the country, the host
    institution and other.

20
Financial Aid
  • Financial Aid is available for all programs
    offered by Truman.
  • For semester and year-long programs (and in some
cases for summer programs) you can apply
scholarships and financial aid loans towards the
cost of the program. Please check for specific
rules at the time of application.

21
Financial Aid
  • The university has a cultural loan program (up to
    5,000.00).
  • The University Foundation offers study abroad
    scholarships.
  • Other scholarships are available on a competitive
    basis.
