3
What is PBL?
  • Project-based learning is an effective approach
to learning and instruction in adult basic
    education.

4
Elements of Project Based Learning
  • Timing
  • Collaboration
  • Student Directed investigation
  • Multidiscipline.

5
  • Real life problems
  • Systemic Assessment
  • Products

6
  • Although PBL has an extended time frame, It gives
students practice in using the skills needed for
their adult lives and careers (how to allocate
    time/resources individual responsibility,
    interpersonal skills, learning through
    experience, etc.)

7
  • It provides opportunities for students to learn
and practice interpersonal skills as they work in
cooperative teams, in groups and/or work with
other classes via the internet and, whenever
possible, with adults in workplaces or the
    community

8
  • It involves one or more of the following
    researching background info, observing,
    collecting data, conducting interviews, sharing
    and analyzing data.

9
  • Learning should be integrated from a wide range
    of disciplines or subjects.
  • Many of the strongest projects are ones which
involve more than one discipline, that call for
students to reach beyond the current curriculum
and bring in other areas of learning.

10
  • Engages students in complex, real-world issues
and problems where possible, the students select
and define issues or problems that are meaningful
    to them.

11
  • The purposes of assessment are two
  • 1) Improve the end product.
  • 2) Evaluate the final product.

12
  • assessment has to be ongoing throughout the
process. It is most valuable when students can
get a clear picture of their work and how it
compares to the standards that have been set for
    the project.

13
  • Ends with a product such as
  • Physical model
  • Multimedia presentation
  • Website
  • Video/radio program
  • Book, brochure, newspaper article, poster
  • Poem, song, puzzle, art project
  • that demonstrates learning and is assessed the
criteria could be decided upon by the students.
