Renaissance 101

• The Renaissance was a rebirth of classical
  antiquity. (This means mostly of Greece Rome.)
• The Renaissance lasted from ca. 1350 1550.
• The Renaissance began in Italy and gradually
  spread to the rest of Europe.

Characteristics of the Italian Renaissance

• Marked by an Urban Society.
• Powerful city-states Florence, Venice, Milan
• Centers of politics, economics and social life
• An Age of Recovery.
• Recovery from the Black Death, Political
  Disorder, Economic Recession
• Emphasis on Individual Ability
• - High regard for human worth and the
  development of a new social ideal the
  well-rounded person
• - Ex. Leonardo da Vinci

• During the Renaissance, there was an outburst of
  creativity that stressed order, harmony
  balance.

• Renaissance Art had the following
  characteristics
• Realism Subjects of art were familiar and
  life-like
• Glorification of the Human body
• Non-religious themes
• Appreciation of beauty for beautys sake
• How does this compare with the characteristics
  of Greek art?

Perspective

• Renaissance art utilized perspective.
• This means that they made distant objects smaller
  than those in the foreground to create an
  illusion of depth on a flat canvas.
• This adds an element of three-dimensionality.

Renaissance Architecture

• Return to the glories of Ancient Rome
• Round, geometrical, stout, symmetrical, domed and
  balanced.
• This was called Italian Gothic.

• Sculpture became more accurate, 3-D and natural
• Painting used perspective to create a sense of
  3-D and full reality.

Effects of the Renaissance

• Economic
• Massive De-population from the Plague drove labor
  prices up
• Decline of Feudalism
• Growth in trade manufacturing led to an
  increase in wealth
• Venice Genoa became major Italian marketplaces

• Social
• Gap between the rich and the poor widened
• Growth of the nuclear family due to a more urban
  setting
• Women became more educated not necessarily in
  academic areas, but mainly in religious ed. Or a
  trade.
