Course Objectives
  • Team-based design projects of innovative products
  • Practice of quality functional deployment and
    technological innovation in design
  • Understand team behavior and tools
  • Use multi-media design software and systems

3
Assessment
  • Project I 65
  • Project II 35

4
Project I
  • Building an autonomous machine with smart LEGO
    bricks (Mindstorms)
  • The functionality of the machine
  • Novel? Or Not. (This is very IMPORTANT!!!)

5
Project II
  • Constructing a virtual running environment for
the autonomous machine designed in project I with
    Alias Wavefront Maya System
  • Generating an animation film of the autonomous
machine running in the virtual world with Maya
    system

6
Introduction of LEGO MindStorms I
  • The basic LEGO MindStorms Kit
  • Cost about US200
  • About 750 building block pieces
  • Centerpiece is RCX (programmable control unit)

7
Introduction of LEGO Mindstorms II
  • RCX 16MHz CPU and 32kB RAM
  • GUI Programming environment
  • Library for generating VB programs to control RCX
  • RCX houses a IR transmitter/receiver
  • Sending and receiving data from desktop or other
    RCXs
  • 2 Moters
  • 2 Touch Sensors
  • 1 Light Sensor

8
Introduction of LEGO Mindstorms III
9
GUI of RCX Programming
10
Introduction of Maya
  • Modeling
  • - Advanced polygon, NURBS and subdivision Surface
    modeling tools
  • Animation
  • A comprehensive range of keyframe, non-linear and
    advanced character animation editing tools
  • Deformation tools for modeling and animation
  • Rendering
  • A unified rendering workflow provides easy and
consistent access to software, hardware, mental
ray and vector renderers through a common
    interface

11
Example A LEGO Racing Robot
  • A simple racing robot
  • Children from the age of 8 can successfully build
    them with LEGO bricks
  • A guide

12
