Aftermath of the Earthquakes
In 2001, earthquakes devastated El Salvador.

• More than 330,000 homes damaged or destroyed

• Over 1.2 million left homeless

Lack of shelter and clean water, and poor
sanitary conditions threatened to spread disease

• dengue

• gastroenteritis

• malaria

• cholera

• diarrheal diseases

Bringing the Community Together
A Foundation grant helped men, women, and even
boys and girls begin building their future. They
recieved

• Training on the construction of
• healthy housing

• Funds for construction of the first
• 13 of 100 planned healthy housing
• units

The new community of 100 homes was named the
Centennial Village, honoring PAHOs 100th
Anniversary.
Construction of the homes provided income to
local workers, giving an economic boost to a
devastated community.
Homes in the Centennial Village provide shelter
and basic sanitation to aid in disease
prevention. Features include

• clean drinking water

• sanitary cooking and food storage
• facilities

• sewage and solid waste disposal

healthier future for the families of the
Centennial Village.
