2Aftermath of the Earthquakes
In 2001, earthquakes devastated El Salvador.
- More than 330,000 homes damaged or destroyed
- Over 1.2 million left homeless
Lack of shelter and clean water, and poor
sanitary conditions threatened to spread disease
3Bringing the Community Together
A Foundation grant helped men, women, and even
boys and girls begin building their future. They
recieved
- Training on the construction of
- healthy housing
- Funds for construction of the first
- 13 of 100 planned healthy housing
- units
4The new community of 100 homes was named the
Centennial Village, honoring PAHOs 100th
Anniversary.
Construction of the homes provided income to
local workers, giving an economic boost to a
devastated community.
Homes in the Centennial Village provide shelter
and basic sanitation to aid in disease
prevention. Features include
- sanitary cooking and food storage
- facilities
- sewage and solid waste disposal
5Healthy Homes for the Future
By providing new, more durable and more sanitary
housing, VIVISAL laid the foundation for a
healthier future for the families of the
Centennial Village.
