The Fate of Fayette County

• There are more than 722,000 people currently
  living in Central Kentucky who could be impacted
  by a disaster
• The community must be prepared to respond and
  recover from disaster
• As recent disasters have shown there are not
  enough responders to meet the overwhelming needs
  and demands during such an event

Medical Reserve Corps

• There is a need for an organized volunteer
  response to help the community respond and
  recover from a disaster
• The MRC was founded to help communities meet
  these challenges
• Sponsored by the Office of the Surgeon General,
  in conjunction with the White House USA Freedom
  Corps the Department for Homeland Security
  Citizen Corp
• Lexington-Fayette County MRC was established in
  December 2006

• To assist the community in meeting public
  health emergencies and ongoing public health
  initiatives

MRC Concept

• Create a system for pre-identification of health
  volunteers
• Prepare them to respond in advance of an
  emergency
• Teach them local response plans
• Train them on techniques that will be used
• Equip them with the tools they need

What do MRCs Do?

• MRC volunteers are incorporated into local
  community emergency response plans and called
  upon to provide service during national, state or
  local emergencies. MCR volunteers may assist in
  the provision of the following services
• Mass medication/vaccination clinics
• Special needs shelters

What do MRCs Do?

• Provide medical care in an alternative care
  treatment facility
• Assist in Communicable Disease investigations
• Provide education
• Provide Support Staff services
• Provide Language Interpretation

As a Volunteer

• You commitment will be
• To have a criminal background check
• Provide professional credentialing information
• Visit the Lexington-Fayette County Health
  Department to get an ID made
• Participate in core and mission specific training
  sessions
• Participate in exercises and call-down procedures
• Assist in emergencies or other scheduled public
  health activities
