What is The Jungle?

• The Jungle was written by Upton Sinclair in 1906
• Following its publishing, the government
  launched an investigation in meatpacking plants
• Federal food laws were changed as a result of the
  publication of this book.

The Meat

• The good meat was packaged and sold
• The good meat that had gone bad was salted to
  halt rotting
• The bad meat had gone worse was treated with
  chemicals to hide bad smell, color, and flavor
• The worse meat that had gone rancid was thrown
  into sausage (along with anything else they could
  find)

The Workers

• The Workers washed their hands in the water that

• They were numbed from working the machines for
  many hours
• The workers were sick and miserable
• The lives of the workers contained merely two
  things work, and sleep
