using the Koalaty Kid approach to continuous
improvementThey would see
10They Would See
- The classroom mission statement displayed
- Classroom goals and measures

14More On Koalaty Kid
- When schools apply these principles and
techniques to the critical issues in their
schools, the opportunity for Koalaty Kid to
create positive, lasting change in schools and
students is dramatic. - Koalaty Kid is simply a continuous improvement
process of using quality tools in a Plan, Do,
Study, Act cycle in which students can
participate
15Training Model
- 6 days of training in
- Plan, Do, Study, Act process- PDSA
- Theory of foundation principles
- Use of quality tools
- Practical application to a real problem in the
school - Training of a small group (typically a Building
Leadership Team) first, then all staff

19Case Study
- Mytown Middle School has noticed a decline in
student writing in recent years. In 1998, 92 of
the grade 8 student scored in exemplary or pass
categories. This past year the same measures
included only 79. The staff wants to know why.
Armed with class samples and scores from
standardized tests, the staff begins.
20Improvement Process Statement
- To improve student performance in writing as
measured by performance on standardized test,
performance on classroom samples, and student
satisfaction with writing performance.
21Standardized Test Scores
22Pareto Chart of Percentage of Errors from Tests
- Most errors (31) on supporting with detailed
sentences - Second category (23) answering the prompt
- Third is (17)conclusion
- Now we can ask, Whats causing these errors?

25Brainstorming
- Improvement Statement If we ________
- ___________________________________,
- then student performance on standardized tests
and classroom assignments should improve, along
with student satisfaction. - Use consensus tools to generate ideas and
determine your course of action. (NGT, Affinity
Diagram, Multivoting.)

What? Who? When?
28Try Out the Improvement Theory
- After implementation, check data again to see if
the desired change has occurred. - If the change is somewhat successful, what else
might you need to do? - If the change has been fairly successful,
standardize the change. - If the change has not improved, or made the
results worse, go back to root cause.
29Its Called Continuous Improvement . . .
- Because it never ends!
- Go back and look at what else needs some work
within this process. - Check the Cause and Effect to see what other
causes to go after. - Check the Pareto for the next largest bar.
- Revisit your brainstormed list to see what else
might help. - Ask for feedback from the team as to what else
needs to be done.
30Quality in RISD 41

for classroom improvements - Lincoln/Baldrige school improvement template used
by all schools - Principals trained as Lincoln Examiners
