Title: Endangered Species

1
Endangered Species
2
  • Endangered Species are plants or animals that are
in danger of extinction (dying out).
  • Over 8,300 plants and 7,200 animal species around
the world are threatened with extinction.
  • The main cause of extinction or endangerment is
    habitat destruction commercial exploitation (such
as plant collecting, hunting, and trade in animal
    parts) and pollution.
  • Since the 1600s the rate of extinction has
increased rapidly because of human population
    growth and human resource consumption.

3
Endangered species prevention act
  • The endangered species prevention act was passed
    in 1966.
  • This allowed listing of only native animal
species as endangered and provided limited
    protection for the animals listed.
  • The Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1969
was passed to provide additional protection to
species in danger of worldwide extinction.
  • Violation of the act will be a 2,000-5,000 fine
with 9 months imprisonment for an intentional
taking and you would also have suspension of
    hunting license privileges.

4
Some solutions on helping endangered species.
  • choosing the gender of cattle, horses, sheep,
goats and pigs to be female so females can have
    more babies.
  • Another way to improve their population is
    captive breeding.
  • Genetic cloning is also a way to help endangered
species later but only as a last resort.

5
Some Endangered or threatened Species
  • Siberian Tiger (endangered)
  • African Wild Dog (endangered)
  • African Elephant (Threatened)
  • American Alligator (endangered)
  • Asian Lion (endangered)
  • Bald Eagle (Threatened)
  • Blue Whale (endangered)
  • Sea Otter (Threatened)
  • Snow Leopard (Threatened)
  • White Pelican (Threatened)
  • White Rhino (endangered)

Endangered Siberian Tiger

About the Siberian tiger
  • The Siberian tiger is found in eastern Siberia
and also in Northern China and Korea.
  • The Siberian tiger is the largest living cat in
the world. They can be 9 to 12 feet long and are
about 3 and a half feet long they weigh between
    400-650 pounds.
  • The Siberian tiger is endangered for several
different reasons like they were hunted and
killed for different proposes like in China they
    were killed traditionally for medicines.
  • There are now less than 200 kinds of species left
in the wild. After world war 2 they almost
disappeared from the wild but the soviet union
took measures to restore their population.

Bald Eagle
  • The largest number of northern bald eagles are in
    the Northwest, especially in Alaska.
  • Bald eagles were officially declared an
endangered species in 1967 in all areas of the
    United States
  • Until 1995, the bald eagle had been listed as
endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 43
of the 48 lower states, and listed as threatened
in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Washington and
    Oregon.
  • There are proposals which prohibit disturbing the
bald eagle, which include disruption of its
breeding, feeding or sheltering practices, which
    could cause death.
  • Officials said the action could lead to the
removal of the bald eagle from the "threatened"
species list within the next year or so.
