2History of the Residential Life Recycling Program
- Program started 10 years ago
- Varying degrees of success
- Not very high student participation
- Green Campus Committee established in 1998 to
support environmental awareness and support the
recycling program - Position of campus environmental coordinator is
created to oversee environmental issues at the
college
3Different types of Recycling Containers
Versus
Large blue containers are available on each floor
of every hall for community use
Each room has small blue recycling containers for
individual use

5Recycling and Waste Management
- Team Recycle is part of the Environmental
Services Dept. for Greensboro - Guilford uses Team Recycle, a free service.
- Guilford recycles 10 different materials
office/computer paper, plastic soda bottles (1),
plastic milk or water jugs (2), newspapers,
magazines, aluminum cans, tin cans, empty aerosol
cans, corrugated cardboard, and chip board.

- Recyclables go to Fairfield County Recycling
(FCR). - Student recycling always needs improvement.

7Sheer Amount Of Waste
- Less than half of materials could be recyclable
are not - Half of materials that are put in to be
recyclable are contaminated
8College Procedures
- On campus 5 trash dumpsters and 4 recycling
dumpsters - One on campus trash compactor/dumpster
- Each room has an individual recycling bins
- Monday and Thursday recycling is picked up
- Not efficient
9Recycling Survey
- 65 that were surveyed considered themselves
consistent recyclers - 88 that were surveyed thought they knew what
could and could not be recycled
