BACKGROUND
  • Major interest in public health services and
    public health professionals has been the public
    health problems of the community (1).
  • Public health professionals should contribute to
    determining public health problems, finding
    solutions and improving health status of the
    community.

AIM
  • The aim of the present study is to assess the
    public health perspective of the five public
    health journals with the highest impact factors
    in 2007 (2).

  • Web-based search was conducted in August 2008 and
    March 2009.
  • Five journals with the highest impact factors
  • American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM),
  • American Journal of Public Health (AJPH),
  • European Journal of Public Health (EJPH),
  • Annual Review of Public Health(ARPH),
  • Preventive Medicine (PM).
  • Totally, 964 articles in five journals were
    searched.

METHOD-4
  • The developed and developing countries were
    classified according to human development indices
    (HDI).
  • If the indices are higher than 0.9, the country
    was classified as developed country (3).
  • The news titles were inspected on WHO internet
    address in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 years (4).
  • The relations were assessed between public health
    journal and those news.

  • From 2005 to 2008 the global news on the WHO web
    site was assessed (4).
  • The comparison of the scientific journals and
    global public health agenda (WHO) was done

  • Totally 964 articles with supplements
  • Ninety one articles (in 6 supplements)were not
    included
  • The subjects of the supplements were tobacco
    control, humanitarian crisis, accident/injuries/vi
    olence, communicable diseases, substance and
    alcohol use and health education.
  • The constant of the articles were original
    article 63.91 (n558), the others such as
    review, letter etc. 36.09 (315).

RESULTS
  • The subjects of communicable disease were HIV
    with 54.9, influenza with 6.8 and tuberculosis
    with 4.9.
  • Ninty-six point one percent of HIV/AIDS releated
    articles were from developed countries.

CONCLUSION
  • Majority of the articles were from developed
    countries.
  • The most popular subjects were Health Promotion,
    Communicable Diseases, Non-communicable Diseases.
  • Least popular subjects were Health Economic,
    Environmental Health, Geriatrics.
  • Adult age group was the most frequent among all
    age groups.
  • The most popular news on the WHO agenda were
    HIV/AIDS, Influenza, and TB. It was parallel with
    the content of the articles. However, articles
    were majorly from developed countries whereas WHO
    agenda was from less developed countries.

recommendations
  • The content of the article is recommended to be
    focused on the most public health problems
    especially in less developed world.
  • Age transition in the recent decades should be
    taken into consideration in the agenda of the
    journals.
  • Articles from developing countries should be
    supported from developed world.
