Mission
  • Back from five years of seeing the world and
working odd jobs, Larry Burke decided to write
about his experiences. When he could find no
all-purpose outdoors magazine, the seed for
    Outside was planted.
  • What we wanted was to create a magazine that,
first and foremost, was for a year-round, active
lifestyle, that took into consideration the
sports, the travel, the people, the politics, the
art, the literature of the world outside, Burke
    recalled.

1995 The Move to Santa Fe
  • Swapping skyscrapers for sky
  • A suitable setting for a magazine that tries to
capture the spirit of the open spaces and high
peaks of the American landscape Burke
  • proximity to hiking, skiing, rafting, riding and
other pursuits favored by Outside staffers
  • A visitor who can make it past the lobbys
roaring fire and comfy chairs to the reception
desk sees behind it an indoor cactus garden
    straddling a stream
  • Every office has opening window!
  • The building is environmentally correct
  • The 15,600-square-foot structure has computerized
heating and cooling systems. Its divided into
zones so as the sun moves around the building,
the heat shuts off in areas that dont need it.
  • There are low-water-use plumbing fixtures, and
rain water is collected and stored in an
    underground tank for landscape irrigation.
  • Nontoxic finishes and materials were used inside
the building, the parking is graveled,
    eliminating oil-base product

Influence
  • In the very broad category of outdoors magazine
writing, Outside magazine has set the standard
    for two decades.
  • Not only has it published well-known
writer/adventurers, it also has sought work by
    more literary types.
  • The Best of Outside, - especially the pieces by
McGuane, Smith, Krakauer, Frazier, Roberts and a
handful of others are classics in the genre,
the measure by which future outdoors writing will
    be judged.
  • Seattle Times, Jan. 25, 1998
  • The success of Outside, people in the industry
say, lies in its ability to straddle the two,
typically distinct worlds of niche publications
    and general interest magazines.
  • New York Times, Oct. 27, 1997

12
Influence
  • Readers have come to expect sophisticated and
nuanced photography in the pages of Outside
Outside has in some ways become a victim of its
own success. In the mid- to late Nineties, the
classic Outside style of photography became the
norm in advertising, with agencies co-opting the
look to sell everything from SUVs to soft drinks.
  • The photography drives readers, newsstand sales,
    and advertisers.
  • Instead of resting on our laurels, weve taken
the exact opposite approach, which is to keep
improving our product. The magazines that get in
trouble are the ones that stagnate. Outsides
    VP and Publisher, Scott Parmelee
