• Set up as a radical alternative to the county
  asylums, the Maudsley Hospital opened in an
  atmosphere of therapeutic optimism.  Despite its
  novelty, the first twenty five years have largely
  escaped the attention of scholars.
• Professor Edgar Jones has just completed a long
  awaited historical study of the Maudsley, funded
  by the Wellcome Trust.
• In this lecture he will consider -
• Which categories of patients and illnesses were
  treated, and how?
• What do we know about medical superintendent
  Edward Mapother, and other senior clinicians?
• What were the guiding principles in the
  hospitals operation and management?
• How was the hospital funded?
