Title: INCORPORATING METAPHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS

1
INCORPORATING METAPHONOLOGICALAWARENESS
  • INTO THERAPY FOR ARICULATORY/PHONOLOGICAL
    DISORDERS

2
I. DEFINITION
  • Hodson (2008) prefers the term metaphonological
    awareness
  • Metaphonology is defined as the ability to
reflect on and pay attention to the phonological
    structure of language
  • Metaphonology activities are designed to increase
skills in such areas as rhyming, syllable
    segmentation, and sound blending

3
Many unintelligible children
  • Also have metaphonological awareness deficits
    (Hodson, 2008)
  • Young children with severe phonological disorders
are especially vulnerable to reading, writing,
and spelling problems later in childhood

4
II. METAPHON THERAPY
  • This is designed to enhance childrens
    metaphonological awareness skills
  • This type of therapy assumes that the childrens
difficulties dont lie in motor production of
sounds, but in the acquisition of the rules of
    the phonological system

5
Metaphon therapy
  • Is often used with preschool children who have
    moderate-severe phonological disorders
  • It focuses on feature differences between sounds
to help children develop an awareness that sounds
    can be classified by characteristics

6
These characteristics include
  • Place (e.g., front-back)
  • Noise (noisy vs. quiet sounds)
  • Duration (long vs. short)

7
III. ACTIVITIES TO INCREASE METAPHONOLOGICAL
AWARENESS
  • Label sounds according to features (e.g., /th/ is
a tongue cooler /p/ is a lip popper)
  • Associate sounds with animals (/r/ is the tiger
    sound)

8
  • Segmenting syllables (how many syllables per
    word)
  • Segmenting sounds ( of sounds per word)
  • Phoneme isolation (1st/last sound in a word)

9
  • Structured readingLook and listen for the ___
    sound
  • Recognize rhyming words
  • Sound blending (e.g., c-a-t what word is that?)

10
  • Spoonerisms (Prinderella and the Cince)
  • Delete sounds/syllables (say turkey without
    the tur ).

11
I believe
  • That we can use metaphonological awareness
activities even with children who just have 1-2
    sounds in error
