4High School
- Wilma remembered when she started
High School they had no program when she started
High School. They carried milk, eggs, home canned
vegetables, bags of potatoes that they traded for
their lunch. They carried half gallon jars of
home grown vegetables that her Mother canned them
in the jars and they would bring the empty jars
back and trade them the next year. All the food
they used practically in the lunch program was
brought in by people that wanted their lunch and
then they traded for their lunch. Then whenever
she started to she worked in the lunch room she
would get her lunch free. Wilma worked every noon
hour, and she would get her lunch free. Wilma had
to milk the cows of a morning before she went to
school, and then she would come home and milk the
cows in the evening. Wilmas sister would do the
housework, and Wilma would help with the outside
work. She lived on a farm. On the weekends she
would walk two miles, worked for 4 hours, and got
a quarter and then finally walked home.
5Dads Car
- At one time Wilmas Dad bought a car, and
it had a rumble seat in it. A rumble seat is a
seat back where the trunk is now, and it opened
up for them to sit in. All the kids would ride in
it. Of course you were out in the weather.
6Pete Burgers.
- Her, her brothers, and her sisters walked to
school two miles and carried that food too. They
walked down a path through the woods and down
over the hill and came out down at the Milk Plant
at that time. When Wilma was in High School she
worked at Pete Burgers. It was down where the
church is and the Clover Farm is now. It was a
restaurant and a little store. She said we
flipped burgers and waited on people and stalked
shelves and things. She didnt remember what she
made but it wasnt a lot, but she bought all of
her school supplies with it at that time.
