What is LinkFinder Plus?

• An OpenURL linking system, providing a bridge
  between citation databases and Library journal
  subscriptions
• It connects citations to fulltext wherever the
  fulltext is located
• Where electronic fulltext isnt available,
  catalogue searches are run to locate print
  holdings
• Facilitates seamless, enhanced access to
  resources, delivered to the clients desktop
  anywhere, anytime

Why LFP at UWS?

• 7 campuses over a distance of 70 km N-S, 50 km
  E-W plus remote and international students/staff.
• UWS Library is actively pursuing appropriate
  electronic access over print access to materials
• 40,216 UWS journal titles available online in
  2003 (86 of total journal subscriptions)

How does it work on the administrative side?

• Administration consists of
• the Knowledge Base which contains
• Sites (databases or publishers)
• Targets (journal titles within the Site)
• Journals (in some cases, new Journals can be
  linked to existing Targets)
• Extended Services
• Where additional services can e established, such
  as catalogue search links, general web search
  links, and more

Sites

• As well as the name, Sites settings define the
  connection type, generally http or XML

Targets

• Targets are the titles under that Site. For each
  one that is activated, the institution defines
  the date range according to individual
  institutional subscriptions

How does it work?

• Can activate Targets individually, activate a
  whole Site, or use batch activation scripts for
  specific Targets in a Site.
• To create the required XML files for
  loading/activation, tools such as XML Spy can be
  used. UWS has custom-developed java scripts to
  create the files instead
• Serials Solutions can supply the base reports for
  the XML file generation. UWS is instead using a
  combination of vendor-supplied title lists and
  Voyager holdings reports

What does it look like for clients?

• UWS has a custom button for the link
• We provide vendors with URL link for the button,
  customising size of the image if needed

What is behind the Link button?

• The vendor site creates an OpenURL query to
  interrogate the LinkFinder KnowledgeBase,
  activated when the client clicks the Link button

options to retrieve the full text

UWS Link details

• 22,500 Targets currently available in the
  Knowledge Base
• 10,000 UWS titles currently available
• Number of Sites and Targets in LFP KnowledgeBase
  increasing as more vendors support OpenURLs.
• Most vendors now able to link to the article
  level

Other useful information

• LFP integrates well with EZProxy, operating
  seamlessly for our off campus clients
• To date, no load issues have been experienced
• UWS has written reports to draw out from the
  KnowledgeBase the numbers/details of Targets
  activated for individual Sites.

  is a useful source of information about LFP
• Our clients, and Library staff, already wonder
  how they did without it before we went live in
  November 2003
