- The Departments Goals do
- Support Educating Illinois
4Vision
- The Department of Agriculture at Illinois State
University will enhance the global food and
agriculture industry by
- providing a premier educational experience,
- conducting high-quality research, and
- providing timely outreach services.
5Goal 1. Provide premier undergraduate educational
experience in agriculture.
United States Agriculture Travel Course
Developing honors section of AGR 203.
National Agriculture Marketing Association
Collegiate FFA Best Agriculture Career Day in his
tory Fall of 2006 --- 35 employers attending.
6Goal 2. Provide high quality M.S.
- The department has its second Fulbright Scholar
- More graduate students present results at
professional meetings.
- Established Department Graduate Student Research
Presentation Series.
7Goal 3. Scholarly activities in agriculture
- Research teams recieve research and sponsored
program funding
- feed research, water management, livestock and
urban waste management, and wind and other
renewable energy projects.
- Increased undergraduate participation in research
activities and the Research Symposium
8Goal 4. Participate in service and economic
development activities
- The IAA sponsored Agriculture Policy Series.
- The new Horticulture Center -- very successful
inaugural Autumnal Festival.

department
- Increased its offerings of discipline based
contests and competitions for students and
potential future students.
- It hosted the largest high school land judging
contest at its Farm in over 25 years.

- Inaugural New Zealand Marketing Export Internship
with the COB and Technology
- Continued participation in the academic French
Exchange Program

qualified students, including under-represented

with the CHSAS to support diversity in the
department.
- Increased its Funk Scholarships by 10,000

13Statistics to measure productivity of department
as an academic unit
- Enrollment up 25 in two years
- If decline had not been turned around by quick
actions taken by faculty and staff since the
summer of 2004 the enrollment in the Department
in the Fall of 2006 would have been about 150
students instead of 253.
14Productivity
- Increased its total credit hours from
- 5,203 in calendar year 2004 to
- 6,417 in calendar year 2006,
- an increase of over 23.
- Student-faculty ratio in the Fall 2005 semester
was 18.8 which was 14th highest out of 34.
15Productivity
- The increase in scholarship funding and in
recruiting of talented students contributed to
increasing the average ACT scores of entering
freshmen - 21.3 in the Fall 2003 freshman class
- 23.3 in the Fall 2005 freshman class
- Rate of increase 10 times the rate at Illinois
State.

- Research funding -- tenth highest on average
external grants (604,566) 2001-- 05
- Re-established strong connections with the
Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences
- two new freshmen in 2006 freshmen class
17Productivity through EMPOWERMENT It is
important to recognize the Departments faculty
and students for their contributions
- energy,
- individual efforts and
- Entrepreneurialism.
18For example, in past few months
- The most successful and highly attended
Horticulture event in its recent history -- the
Autumnal Festival,
- The most highly attended high school judging
contest at the University Farm in 20 years,
- Most successful Agriculture Career Day in the
history of the Department -- 35 employers.
19II. Internal Reallocations and Reorganizations in
FY07
- Approximately 6,000 in operating and
approximately 4,000 in student labor to new
Horticulture Center activities.
- Associate Professor Ag Ed position -- Dr.
Steffen.
- Faculty -- reassign the Ag Eng. Tech. position to
a horticulture position as the first priority in
personnel, -- Fall 2007 is preferred.
- Faculty decided to request a position for a
second professor with Agriculture Education
disciplinary interests as their second priority
in personnel
20- Over 40,000 of Foundation funding to support
undergraduate scholarships, and most of the
departments recruiting and marketing programs.
The department has a strong and loyal alumni
association membership. - Approximately 40,000 of equipment, operating and
variance funds -- two new 12 passenger vans to
support additional field trips for off campus
experiential activities.
21- The Department spent farm revenues on several
important improvements on the Farm including
upgrades of the feed center operation, new safety
and environmental health equipment/facilities,
and new rolling stock. - They are in the process of replacing two
livestock shelters destroyed in a 2006 storm.
- The College paid for improvements in Ropp 107
making it a much better classroom/lab for FCS and
Horticulture courses.
22III. Major Objectives for FY08
- Construct a green house with utilities at the
Horticulture Center.
- Continue to increase enrollment and retention of
a highly qualified and diverse student cohort for
the Department.
- Continue to improve the efficacy of the
undergraduate program.
- Hire an additional professor of Horticulture and
an additional professor of Agriculture Education
- Continue to search for ways to address the
departments on-campus facilities and equipment
short comings.

scholarship funding over the next five years.
