The Confederate Government
  • Jefferson Davis was elected President of the CSA
and held that office until the surrender at
    Appomattox in 1865
  • He was arrested in Georgia in May of that same
    year and was imprisoned

18
Problems of the Confederate government
  • Each state was represented in a cabinet whose
    membership changed frequently
  • No competing political parties i.e. Republicans
    v Democrats
  • The centralization of power which was necessary
to conduct war ended up conflicting with the
    commitment of states rights.

19
CSA War Financing
  • Funds were raised by printing national and state
    bonds and paper currency
  • This resulted in an inflation rate which reached
over 9,000 in 4 years (v 117 in the North)
  • Which led to shortages of everything and a bread
riot in 1863 by women in several southern cities
