2Energy Efficiency vs. Conservation
- Green Building - New Construction
- Production Builders on Board Now
- Green Retrofits Can Go Upside Down
- Demand Water Heaters
- Home Run Plumbing
- Dual Pane Windows
- Insulation and Weatherization are Key

3DOE Recommends Thermography
- In addition to using thermography during an
energy audit, you should have a scan done before
purchasing a house even new houses can have
defects in their thermal envelopes. You may wish
to include a clause in the contract requiring a
thermographic scan of the house. A thermographic
scan performed by a certified technician is
usually accurate enough to use as documentation
in court proceedings. - http//www.eere.energy.gov/consumer/your_home/ene

4Background
- Thermal imaging detects surface temperature
differences. Originally, it was used in the
military service to observe enemy movement at
night and in hospitals to monitor the temperature
change of organs and tissues. - Honeywell Adapted the Technology

5Everything Emits Infrared Energy
- Surface Temperatures Are Just Indicators
- Object May Reflect Other Objects Emissions
- Atmosphere Plays a Big Part
- Density and Thermal Capacitance Do Too
- Imager Calculates Temperature
- Scientific Visualization

6Heat Transfer
- Conduction Moves through Solids and Between
Solids That Touch - Frying
- Convection Through Gases Fluids
- Actually mass conduction
- Radiation In Waves as Particles
- Direct sun

7Infrared Applications
- Building Sciences
- Motor and Electric Circuits
- PV Solar Troubleshooting
- Equine
- Marine
- Medical

8Building Science Uses
- Locate Water Intrusion in Roofing
- Locate Air Gaps, Insulation Problems
- Identify Cooling Losses through Ducting
- Create Framing Maps
- Monitor Retrofit Insulation Work
- Confirm Quality of Work Completed

30Is this wall insulated? Red is hot, blue is
cold. Its cooling season, and youre inside the
building.
