Gas Law Experiment
  • Purpose Obtain a piece of magnesium from your
    instructor and record its number. Determine the
    mass, in grams, of the magnesium without the use
    of a balance (the mass is too small to accurately
    mass on the electronic balances in this lab).

  • Students have previously determined the molar
    volume of hydrogen using a traditional lab
    format.
  • A detailed procedure for this lab was given and a
    standard laboratory report was written.

  • In the nontraditional lab, no procedure is given
    and no data analysis is reviewed prior to the
    lab.
  • A 2-5 cm piece of magnesium ribbon is massed by
    the instructor and given to each student.
  • Hydrogen gas is collected as it was in the
    traditional lab.
