Minnesota MATHCOUNTS
  • Over 1,100 Minnesota students from more than 170
    schools participated in 2007
  • Roughly 115 competed at the state level

Minnesota MATHCOUNTS
  • Volunteer members of the MN Society of
    Professional Engineers (MSPE)
  • 12 regional competitions in MN during the month
    of February
  • Each competition organized by an MSPE volunteer
    coordinator
  • MSPE also organizes the state competition

  • Minneapolis Public Schools City of Lakes
    Minneapolis competition held on campus at the
    University of Minnesota
  • All schools in the Minneapolis boundary eligible
    to participate
  • Suburbs of Minneapolis compete separately
  • Engineering students from the U of M volunteer

MATHCOUNTS TIMELINE

  • Registration kits and handbooks with MATHCOUNTS
    problems mailed to schools
  • Schools send in registrations (due early Dec.)
  • Math clubs meet to practice
  • MATHCOUNTS problems incorporated into curriculum
  • January
  • Schools hold in-school competitions to see who
    goes to finals (optional)
  • List of students sent to chapter coordinator

    participate four on a team and up to four
    individuals

  • State competition (March 14-15, 2008)

  • Top four students from Minnesota competition
    travel to national finals
  • A student from Field Middle School was on the
    Minnesota team in 2006

TEACHER RESOURCES
  • School handbook with over 300 problems
  • Problem of the week at www.mathcounts.org
  • Not a large time commitment if already have a
    math club, MATHCOUNTS can easily be incorporated,
    with the competition being the finals a great
    way for the students to get recognition of their
    hard work
  • MSPE can help find a coach or co-coach to work
    with the students
  • Many additional teacher resources available on
    MATHCOUNTS Web site

REGISTRATION
  • Forms available in Sept. contact MSPE for a
    registration kit or register online at
    www.mathcounts.org
  • COST
  • 80 per team, 20 per individual 160 for full
    registration of eight students
  • Reduced rate for schools eligible for Title I
    funds 40 per team and 10 per individual
