Emerging Green Builders

• Emerging Green Builders is a committee of the
  U.S. Green Building Council
• The Emerging Green Builders group consists of
  students and young professional interested in
  promoting and leading a sustainable future.
• Our local affiliate to USGBC is the Mid-TN
  Chapter of the USGBC

Organizational Structure

• The first meeting in Nashville was held in March
  2005.
• Meetings are held monthly.

Emerging Green Builders

• The local chapter of the EGB invites students
  involved in engineering and technology, health
  sciences, environmental studies, business,
  agriculture, design, education, and the sciences
  to expose themselves to green building principles
  outside of the classroom

Sustainable Design

• Sustainability - Living in such a way as to meet
  the needs of the present without compromising the
  ability of future generations to meet their own
  needs.
• Sustainable design is the art of designing
  physical objects to comply with the principles of
  economic, social, and ecological sustainability.
  It ranges from the microcosm of designing small
  objects for everyday use, through to the
  macrocosm of designing buildings, cities, and the
  earth's physical surface.

  impact of buildings on the environment and
  occupants in five broad areas

LEED TM Certification Levels

• Basic LEED certification 26 to 32 points
• Silver level - 33 to 38 points
• Gold level - 39 to 51 points
• Platinum level - 52 to 69 points

• The Administration category addresses policies or
  commitments to sustainability that are usually
  made in the institutions mission statement or
  master plan.

• The Climate Change Energy category focuses on
  initiatives to improve energy efficiency and
  conservation, and on efforts to obtain energy
  from renewable sources.

• The Food Recycling category looks primarily at
  dining services and its policies and practices
  relating to sustainability, including the
  quantity and availability of both locally grown
  and organic food, as well as campus-wide programs
  on recycling and composting.
