5Electronic Diesel Control (EDC)
- System Overview
- The system composed from three main categories
Sensors, Electronic control unit, and Actuators,
sensors supply the control unit with information
regarding the vehicle's operating condition the
control unit evaluates these information, and
send signals to actuators in order to control the
fuel quantity.

71) Accelerator position (APP) sensor
- The APP sensor can comprise of a potentiometer,
signals from the APP sensor are used by the ECM
to determine the exact accelerator position. - 1. Potentiometer and idle/full load switch
- 2. Spring
- 3. Shaft

93) Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
- This sensor contains a permanent magnet partly
enclosed in a soft iron core and partly in a
field winding the tip of the sensor is
positioned close to the flywheel ring gear, as
the teeth or pins of the trigger wheel pass the
sensor the magnetic field changes, inducing a
voltage signal which is sent to the engine
control module (ECM). - 1. Soft iron core
- 2. Field winding
- 3. Permanent magnet
- 4. Flywheel ring gear
- 5. TDC pin

104) EDC control unit
- The EDC control unit assumes the following
tasks- - Regulate Injection quantity by sending control
signals to the quantity adjuster. - The EDC control unit calculates the commencement
of injection depending on the influencing factors
such as, engine speed sensor, coolant temperature
sensor, needle lift sensor etc, and issues the
corresponding output command to the commencement
of injection valve in the injection pump. - Regulate charge pressure and exhaust gas
recirculation. - Controlling the glow plug system and the
auxiliary heater. - Controlling the cruise control system.

- The engine coolant (ECT) sensor probe is immersed
in coolant and changes its resistance in
proportion to engine coolant temperature changes.
the sensor incorporates a negative temperature
coefficient (NTC) resistor, which decreases in
resistance as the temperature rises. - 1. Electrical connections
- 2. Housing
- 3. NTC resistor

126) Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) solenoid
- To reduce the oxides of nitrogen emitted by the
exhaust, a proportion of the exhaust gas can be
returned to the inlet, manifold when operating
conditions allow, this is done by EGR.

137) Fuel filter
- It is used to eliminate water and dirty from
diesel
Previous page
148) Fuel injection pump
- EDC pump, is used to pump the fuel throughout the
system - 1. Potentiometer for
- control-collar position
- 2. Quantity adjuster
- 3. Electric cut-off valve
- 4. Plunger
- 5. Solenoid valve
- for start of injection
- 6. Control Collar
- 7. Timing device

159) Fuel injector (with needle lift sensor)
- It has an integral inductive sensor, at the
commencement of injection the magnetic setting
pin moves upwards and induces an alternating
current into the sensor windings, this
information, together with signals from the
crankshaft position sensor, is used by the engine
control module (ECM) to measure the injection
timing. - 1. Setting pin
- 2. Sensor winding
- 3. Pressure pin
- 4. Electrical connector

1610. Fuel tank
- It is used to store Diesel in it.
Previous page
1711. Glow plug relay
- It is used to supply the current to the glow plug
Previous page
1812. Glow plug
- Glow plugs are used to raise the temperature in
the combustion chambers to enable the engine to
be started in low temperatures. The glow plugs
can also be used during cold running to reduce
harmful exhaust emissions, blue smoke and
knocking. - 1. Terminal
- 2. Insulator
- 3. Casing
- 4. Element seal
- 5. Heater and control coils
- 6. Glow tube
- 7. Powder

1913. Glow plug warning lamp
- This is just to tell you that the glow plugs are
heating up in readiness for a cold start. You
should wait for the light to extinguish before
starting the engine.

2014. Ignition switch
- Connect electrical circuits in the vehicle
Previous page
2115.Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
- The MIL has illuminated during driving this means
there is a malfunction trouble code stored in the
vehicles computer

2216. Mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- It is fitted between the air filter and intake
manifold, the task of the air-mass flow meter is
to measure the fresh air mass supplied to the
engine, this fresh air mass is used to calculate
the exhaust gas recirculation rate and the
permissible injection quantity

2317. Vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
- Measure the speed of the vehicle and send
information to ECU. - Speedometer
- Power train Control Module (PCM)
