2Integration of Pediatric Research into CTSA
- Since 1962 the Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh
GCRC had a historically successful clinical and
translational research program before the CTSA. - CTSA provides a range of participant recruitment
and clinical interaction resources (PCIR) that
support translational patient-oriented research
in pediatrics. - CTSA provides additional resources through
collaboration with the CTSI Center for Clinical
and Translational Informatics (CCTI) (data
management, statistical support etc.) and pilot
funding. - CTSA provides extensive educational opportunities
that support the research activities of pediatric
junior faculty and trainees enrolled in CTSI
training programs. - CTSA provides institutional support for
large-scale community-based pediatric research
outside the PCTRC. - The CTSA will facilitate the development of
interdisciplinary research.
3Key Challenges for Pediatric Research
- Institutional Review Boards (IRB)
- IRB restrictions hinder meritorious
pediatric research - Need for uniformity and standardization
across IRBs - Shrinking pool of pediatric physician-investigator
s - Lack of K funding opportunities for International
Medical Graduates. - Dwindling NIH funding despair of
investigators - Junior investigators we dont want
this kind of lifestyle! - Senior investigators when can I
retire? - The notion that adults are good models for
diseases that affect children and adults is
wrong. Research in pediatrics should not be
swallowed up by research in adults.
4Goals for the Pediatric Steering Committee Meeting
- Identify problems within the larger structure of
the CTSA to insure that pediatric research is not
unfairly compromised in favor of other CTSA
activities/programs. - To develop qualitative and quantitative processes
for comprehensively evaluating and tracking the
success of pediatric research within the CTSA and
pediatric investigators needs. - Work with NIH to develop a timetable to address
and successfully overcome the above stated key
challenges for pediatric research.
