Setting
  • The novel takes place in England during the late
1800s. The characters go many places in the
book. They visit many people and places. The
studio was filled with the rich odour of roses...
There came through the open door the heavy scent
of lilac(p.1). An absurd little theatre,
with great flaring gas-jets and gaudy
    play-bills(p. 49).

The Plot of the Novel
  • In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian Gray has a
portrait painted of himself, he wishes that the
portrait grew old and he stayed young and
handsome forever. Without knowing it, the wish
comes true he and he does not age, but instead
the picture does. Not only does the picture age,
    but it shows Dorians emotions.

Dorian Gray The Main Character
  • Dorian Gray is persuaded very easily. His friend
Lord Henry Wotton can change his mind without
difficulty. This is because Dorian Gray is young
he does not know what the world is like, so he
tries to make his own decisions, but always
changes his plan to Lord Henrys. He was
    certainly wonderfully handsome, with his
finely-curved scarlet lips, his frank blue eyes,
his crisp gold hair. There was something in his
face that made him trust Lord Henry Wotton
trust him at once. All the candour of youth was
there, as well as all youths passionate
    purity(p.17).

Lord Henry Wotton
  • Lord Henry Wotton is a good friend to Dorian
Gray. But he controls Dorian Grays life and
decisions. Everything he tells Gray to do, Gray
does it. Lord Henry likes to have power over
peoples lives and that is why he is such a good
friend to Dorian. Your rank and wealth.... You
are a really good husband, but you are thoroughly
ashamed of your own virtues. You are an
extraordinary fellow. You never say a moral
thing and you never do a wrong thing. Your
    cynicism is simply a pose (p. 3-4).

Major Theme Vanity
  • In the novel Wilde shows how many people think of
themselves very highly. He shows this through
Dorian Gray who believes everyone loves him. All
he thinks about is how handsome he is and what
others think about him. This theme of vanity is
also portrayed through the idea that Gray wants
to stay young forever and be handsome forever.
