3Why AIM?
In Texas, approximately 50 of community college
freshman and 22 of university freshman require
remedial courses in spite of having passed the
state-mandated TAKS test.
4Why AIM?
- In Texas, four years of high school math will
be required for graduation in order to help
ensure that students are prepared for
post-secondary education.
5Why AIM?
- The 4th year of math should be focused on
learning that helps students acquire skills
needed for successful careers while they achieve
college readiness standards.
6AIM Development
- Waco ISD
- TSTC Waco
- Baylor University
- Gear-Up Waco
- Center for Astrophysics Space Physics and
Engineering Research (CASPER)
7AIM Design
- AIM is both relevant and rigorous.
- AIM is relevant because students can see how math
applies as they build robots to meet challenges.
AIM is relevant because it can lead to high-tech
jobs. - AIM is specifically designed with the rigor
associated with pre-calculus or statistics
classes. Exploratory learning is combined with
Accuplacer-like weekly tests that demand mastery
of the content.
8AIM Content
- Basic hydraulic concepts
- Design of structures
- Surveying applications
- Design processes
- Electrical measurements
- Principles of pneumatic pressure and flow
- Manufacturing processes
- Materials engineering
- Mechanical drives
- Plastics technology
- Process control systems
- Quality assurance
- Robotics and computer
- programming
- Thermal systems
9AIM Delivery
- AIM is taught through exploratory learning, using
robots, CAD, and process design software.
10AIM, TEKS, and Fourth-Year Math
- AIM has been approved as Engineering Math which
will serve for the fourth year of math that
starts with the 2011 graduating class.Â
11AIM Teacher Certification
- Teachers must attend a two-week summer training
institute. The training is provided by Texas
State Technical College (TSTC). The training
effort is supported by Waco Independent School
District. Teachers must have a Math or
Career-Tech certificate. Teachers receive a
professional development certificate upon
completion of the training.
12Summary ofBenefits
- Build teamwork skills
- Build problem solving skills
- Demonstrate relevance to students
- Increase relevance to future jobs
- Improve college and career opportunities
- Address cost of remedial education
13Just because a course is academic, dont assume
its rigorous. Just because a
course is CTE, dont
assume its not. - Robert Scott, Commissioner
of Education
