HOW DID WE GET HERE?
  • Filipinos called Manila Men settled in the
marshlands of St.Malo (which is now known as New
    Orleans) in1763.
  • The US approved the Pensionado Act in 1903, it
allowed the intellegent students to come to the
US to try and get back to the Philippines.
  • The passage of the Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1934
helped pave the wave for the Repatriation Act of
    1935.

Adventurous Americans arrived in the Philippines
and spread to all parts, here shown in Baguio,
previously untouched. Although Americans
interacted with Filipinos in order to "civilize"
them, Filipinos were still held in low regard.

OK
  • The Repatriation Act of 1935 helped the Filipinos
who were in the United States to leave the US
with free transportation to go back to the
Philippines because of the yearly quota system.
  • Filipinos in the East and West coast took this
opportunity to come to the US with their families
hoping for a better life for themselves.
  • Filipinos later on were known for having the
fastest growing Asian community in the US.

uneducated, and unworthy were just some of the
derogatory statements that were said on a daily
