    helping to create this lesson
  • Lesson Plans Page - Gives specific lesson plans
and ideas for teaching specific topics.
  • Education Place - A Houghton Mifflin site that
has free graphic organizers and several helpful
    worksheets.
  • IST 396 - This website has the template that this
    PowerPoint was developed from.

    specific websites.

12
Introduction (Teacher)
  • This lesson was developed as an assignment for
the IST 396 class at Oakland University. It is a
lesson that should come before the Web quest
lesson that was designed for the same class.
  • This lesson is an introduction to story elements.
It allows the students to investigate what they
are without really knowing what they are looking
for. By doing this, it gives the students an
opportunity to figure this concept out on their
own instead of just giving them the material.

13
Learners (Teacher)
  • This lesson is anchored in a fourth grade
language arts class. It allows the students to
discover the story elements on their own, instead
of the teacher giving them the answer.
  • Since this lesson is an introduction lesson on
story elements, it is important to make sure that
the students understand what they have discovered
by following this lesson with several other
    lessons about the story elements.

14
Standards (Teacher)
  • Language Arts Standards Addressed
  • Students will use reading for multiple purposes,
such as enjoyment, gathering information, and
    learning new procedures.
  • All students will develop and apply personal,
shared, and academic criteria for the enjoyment,
appreciation, and evaluation of their own and
others oral, written, and visual texts.
  • The other types of thinking that are required of
the students are critical thinking and teamwork.
  • Go to MiCLimb to find more information and
    clarification on the standards.

15
Process 1 (Teacher)
  • In order to help Buddy find his treasure (that he
will share with us in the end) we must get
started right away and stay focused and on task!
  • 1. You cant start without a map outline - print
    the Treasure Map!
  • Dont Forget Fill this out as you work your
    way through the steps.
  • 2. You will be placed into groups of five
    students.
  • Remember Everyone knows how to work in a team,
so keep in mind what teamwork is!
  • 3. Print out the Reading Guide worksheet.
  • Important Each group member will need their
    own worksheet.
  • The students need to have the worksheets at the
very beginning and must keep track of them.
  • For the treasure map, you can individually check
that they have done each step before allowing
them to move on. Check by placing a sticker,
stamp, etcin the space for each step.

16
Process 2 (Teacher)
  • Continuing on our way to the treasure
  • 4. Read the following stories. Fill out the
    Reading Guide as you go.

17
Process 3 (Teacher)
  • Looks like we are almost to the treasure
  • 5. We are now going to get together as a class
and discuss the reading guides that you have
    filled out.
  • Be Ready Everyone is going to need to
contribute to this discussionit is going to lead
us towards the last step to finding the treasure!
  • You may want to start this discussion at the
beginning of a new day to be sure that everyone
is in the same spot and can move on.
  • Go to Lesson Plans Page. This page gives a guide
to discussing the Story Elements. This discussion
can be altered to your liking and what works in
    your classroom.
  • This discussion should end with a brief
description of what the story elements are.

18
Process 4 (Teacher)
  • One more thing and then we are there..
  • 6. Go to Education Place , click on Story Map 1
    and print it out.
  • Go back to Process 2 slide and read ONE of the
stories, filling out the story map that includes
    all of the story elements!
  • After discussing the reading guides with the
students, they should have a better understanding
of the story elements. Having them fill out this
story map will allow them to have practice and
allow you to evaluate their understanding.

19
Process 5 (Teacher)
Welcome to the Story Treasure Chest!!!
20
Resources (Teacher)
  • This lesson should only take 2 -3 days when
working on it for a few hours each day.
  • In order to implement this lesson you will need
    the following materials
  • Computers
  • Reading Guide
  • Story Treasure Map
  • The following websites were also used as part of
    the lesson
  • Education Place (Retrieve the Story Map from
    here)
  • The Lesson Plans Page
  • It would be helpful to have a few aides in the
room throughout this lesson, to help the students
to a greater extent than the teacher can
    him/herself.

21
Evaluation (Teacher)
  • The students will be receiving an individual
grade for this project, but their participation
in the group will be graded. They will be graded
    in the following areas
  • Group Participation
  • The Process
  • Worksheets
  • PRINT OUT the Grading Rubric and ATTACH it to
your worksheets when you turn them in
  • By having the students print out the rubric they
see what they are being graded on.
  • You may also want to go over this rubric before
the assignment is given, so they know what is
    being looked for.

22
Conclusions (Teacher)
  • This lesson is extremely valuable to teachers
that are going to introduce story elements. Doing
an introduction lesson that allows students to
discover concepts on their own is extremely
important because it gives self confidence to the
students and gives them a reason to focus on the
    assignment.
  • As several follow up lessons will be required,
please see the following websites if you are
interested in ideas for follow up lessons.
  • Lesson Plans Page
  • A Webquest on Story Elements
