3How to use this material
- This training program will teach you about using
a computer. You must go through the modules in
the order that they are written. DO NOT skip
modules. The skills you learn in one module may
be needed for other modules - This training program is split into five
modules. These modules are - Introduction to Computers
- Using Computer Programs
- The Keyboard
- Open Office
- The Internet
- The modules will teach you about using a
computer without a teacher. Many pictures are
included to help you learn. - Because computers are different, your computer
might not look the same as the picture. As long
as you can do each Activity, do not worry if your
computer looks different. - If you need extra help, please ask a
facilitator.
4- Each module has three sections
- Introduction- This Introduction describes the
information that you will be learning about. - Information and Activities- The Information is
what you need to learn. The Activities asks you
to practice the skills you are learning about. - Review-The Review summaries and highlights the
things you have learned. You can also practice
your new skills using the review.
We hope you find working with a computer easy and
rewarding.
Enjoy!

8Introduction to the Computer System
- In order to work properly, a computer system
requires 3 components - Hardware A piece of computer equipment that
makes up the computer (For example Monitor,
keyboard, speakers) - Software A computer program that lets you use
the hardware. Software is designed to complete
specific tasks on your computer. (For example
Open Office, Windows XP, Photoshop) - You A computer needs a human to tell it what to
do. Without a human the hardware and software
would be useless.
When you become familiar with the hardware and
software, you will be able to use the computer
for many different things.
- For Example
- To send a family photo by email to family members
across the globe. - To type a résumé to apply for a job.
- To make business presentations, graphs and
charts. - To find information on the internet.
- To listen to music.
9Computer Hardware
A computer has many parts. Look at the picture
below to learn the name of each part.
Monitor
CD/DVD Drive
Keyboard
CPU
Mouse
10- Here is a description of each computer part
- Monitor A screen that shows the information
- Never try to open the monitor because this can
be very dangerous. - CPU (Central Processing Unit) This is the brain
of the computer. It has all of the information
that makes a computer work. It is sometimes
called a tower. - Mouse The mouse lets you tell the computer what
you want. - You use your hand to make the mouse move.
- Keyboard Use the keyboard to type letters and
numbers into the computer. - CD/DVD drive This a place on the computer that
allows you to use CDs and DVDs - A label on the CPU will tell you if your
computer can read CDs or DVDs - .
11Computer Software

- The most important software is called the
operating system. The operating system controls
the computer. Almost all PC computers use an
operating system called Windows. - A new Windows Operating system is released every
few years. For example - Windows 95

uses a different Windows, your screen might look
different than the pictures. If you are having
trouble understanding the difference get help
from the facilitator. - Open Office
