DesignInspiration

As I was saddened by Richard Louvs theory that
children today suffer from what he calls Nature
Deficit Disorder, and Id speculate that many
adults share this disorder. More importantly,
the backlash is taking its toll on our planet.
I dont believe that a bond with nature is best
formed in a once-a-year family vacation to
Yellowstone, rather a more holistic approach is
needed. Thus, I wanted to create a local
retreat to provide opportunity for more
frequent interaction.
My design for an updated, eco-friendly cabin here
in Texas will serve as the springboard to
reintroduce people to nature, redefine what it
means to rough it in the woods, and remind
people of the beautiful treasures that lie in our
own backyard.

Location, location, location
Want close proximity to multiple major
metropolitan areas to ensure large potential
client base, yet far enough removed to satisfy
the need to get away.
Explore Options
An existing site already has utility lines
connections established and a cleared area to
build, plus you may be able to re-use the current
structure or its materials.
Contribute
Urban infill is a good idea, but so is
contributing to a less prosperous, rural area.
Local contribution and revitalization is a strong
aspect of sustainable design.
Impact
The building should be able to be integrated into
the site not imposed upon it.

AdaptiveReuse

I did not want my cabin to be dwarfed by the tall
towering pines that grow throughout East Texas
nor did I want to waste excessive amounts of new
materials to achieve the height I desired so I
re-purposed an old Remington-style barn as my
timeshare structure.
The weathered wood creates a warm exterior that
meshes well with the surrounding environment.
Insulation is laid between the original roof and
a new metal one, allowing the old wood to be
showcased inside.
The rustic aesthetics juxtaposed with
contemporary, clean lines of the interiors make
for a unique experience that the visitor will not
soon forget.

AQUS from WaterSaver Technologies
The AQUS system captures and reuses lavatory
water to flush toilets.
In homes across the U.S., the bathroom accounts
for 74 percent of water used. About 5 percent of
all domestic water consumption runs from the
lavatory faucet in the sink, and eventually into
the sewer. About 40 percent of all domestic water
consumed is used to flush toilets. AQUS can
reduce metered water usage in a two-person
household by about 1020 gallons a day or
approximately 5,000 gallons a year. --AQUS WEBITE

lavatory sink and toilet.
Requires minimal annual maintenance.
Tucked inside the vanity works in conjunction
