Introduction
  • Our category is history and archeology of
Belize. The next slides contain the four main
periods which we will tell you in the next slide.
The history of Belize is quite fascinating. We
are sure you will learn a lot of information
about Belizes past. Now for the next slide...

3
Maya Civilization
  • Belize's history can be divided into four major
categories. They are Maya civilization, European
presence, colonial period, and the early
twentieth century and the present. We'll start
with the category of Maya civilization. At the
highest point in Mayan history there was 1 to 2
million Native Americans in Belize at the time.
When the Mayan reached their peak of development,
the civilization fell apart and vanished. No one
knows for sure what happened to the Mayans city
to make it fall apart and disappear.

4
European Presence
  • Belizes first settlers were English Puritans.
They set up trading posts along the coast.
Pirates, buccaneers, and sailors from wrecked
ships made permanent areas. There they harassed
the Spanish galleons for their silver, gold, and
hardwoods. In a short period of time logging
    became the major job.

5
The Colonial Period
  • Great Britain declared that Belize was now a
colony of British Honduras in the 1840s. Cultural
changes brought about a development for Belize.
The change began when the Europeans that settled
there married slaves that were free.

6
The Early Twentieth Century to the Present
  • Forty-thousand people lived in Belize by the
    1900s. A hurricane in 1931 destroyed a large part
of Belize. As a result Belize had a weak economy.
In 1973, Belizes name was changed from British
Honduras to the present name of Belize.

7
Conclusion
  • We hoped you learned a lot. We did. Here is a
quick review. The four main periods in Belizes
history are Maya civilization, European presence,
Colonial period, and the twentieth century to the
    present
