1
Organizational Culture and Workforce Diversity
  • 8-3

2
Developing an Effective Culture
  • The workplace is changing.
  • A larger amount of younger and older workers are
    finding jobs.
  • Another change is the large amount of part time
workers being used in the market and
    entrepreneurships being started.

3
Organizational Culture
  • Organizational Culture- is the environment in
which people work, made up of atmosphere,
    behaviors, beliefs, and relationships.
  • It shows people how they will be treated in the
    workplace.
  • It identifies what is acceptable and what is not
    acceptable in the workplace.

4
Work Environment
  • Work environment- is the physical conditions and
the psychological atmosphere in which employees
    work.
  • The physical conditions at work are the work
area, offices, break rooms, and storage areas
  • The physical conditions must be safe from harm.
  • What would happen if a worker felt the workplace
    was unsafe?

5
Work Environment
  • Not all jobs can be physically comfortable. Some
require people to work outside in hot or cold
    conditions.
  • What types of jobs may not be physically
    comfortable?
  • Even in those jobs, the business needs to find
ways to provide as much physical comfort as
    possible.
  • With a partner, write down different ways a
business provides physical comfort in a possibly
    hazardous workplace.

6
Work Environment
  • A psychological atmosphere is also very important
    in the workplace.
  • Employees do not want to work in a place where
they feel they are mistreated or where their work
    and ideas are not valued.
  • An atmosphere of mistrust or fear is likely to
result in low morale and poor performance.
  • To provide a positive psychological workplace,
manager need to be honest, fair, and ethical

7
Work-Life Relationships
  • A positive organizational culture is one that
respects the demand on employees from outside the
    job.
  • Personal time
  • Family leave
  • Flex time
  • Job sharing
  • Flex place

8
Personal Time
  • Many companies now offer personal time for
employees to complete non-job activities that can
only be done on work time
  • Example scheduling a dentist appointment

9
Family Leave
  • Allow employees to take a leave of absence fro
the birth or adoption of a child, to care for a
sick family member, or for other personal
    emergencies.
  • In 1993, Congress passed the Family and Medical
    Leave Act.
  • It requires companies employing 50 or more people
to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for
employees who face specific family or personal
    circumstances.

10
Flextime
  • Allows employees some choice in how their work
days and work hours are arranged.
  • Some employees may start and end their work days
    at different times.

11
Job Sharing and Flexplace
  • Job sharing offers one job to two people. Each
person work a part-time schedule. They share the
work space and duties of the job.
  • Flexplace means that some employees can complete
part or all of their work away from the business
    site.
  • Employees who primarily use personal computers
and other technology can work from home.

12
Employer-Employee Relationship
  • Both employers and employees want the business to
be successful. Both want to make money so they
    can buy new items.
  • However, employers and employees usually will
    have different goals in mind.
  • An example of this would be that managers are
usually only worried about making a profit.
While employees are worried about pay, working
    conditions, and job security.

13
Employer-Employee Relationship
  • Is it smart to only have one person making all of
the decisions for a company? Why or why not?
  • Managers and employees have discovered that as
they work together, they find ways to accomplish
the goals of both the organization and the
    individuals who work for it.
  • Managers who involve employees in decision-making
find that better decisions are made.

14
Labor Unions
  • Low wages and poor working conditions caused
employees to band together and form labor unions.
  • Labor union- is an organized group of employees
who negotiate with employers about issues, such
    as wages and working conditions.

15
Workforce Diversity
  • What is workforce diversity?
  • Why is it important?
  • The United States is the most diverse country in
    the world.
  • Prospective employees and customers are attracted
to work and shop in businesses where the
    employees are similar to themselves.

16
Benefits of Diversity
  • Diversity- as it applies to businesses and
organizations, it is the comprehensive inclusion
of people with differences in personal
    characteristics.
  • What are some examples of different personal
    characteristics?
  • Why is it important to have a diverse workplace?

17
Federal Laws Regulating Discrimination
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964
  • Prohibits job discrimination based on race,
color, religion, gender, and national origin
  • Age Discrimination Act in Employment Act of 1967
  • Protects individuals who are 40 years of age or
    older.
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act
