  • We learn to do literacy as we learn how to
    behave and belong in our families and communities
    (Breen et al. 1994) This statement displays
    relevance to the topics of Discourse community,
    our Socio-cultural approaches to Language and
    Learning and how these come about in the context
    of schooling.

Discourse communities
  • Primary discourse involves family, more
    personal level.
  • Secondary discourse involving a community
    other then family or close people e.g.. A uni
    class.
  • Becoming into a discourse community acquisition
    and learning processes.

Socio-cultural approaches to language and learning
  • Social view of language how we use language to
    make meaning.
  • Cultural context Practices within groups which
    shape the way we achieve goals.
  • The socio-cultural context language changes due
    to different background groups in a community.

Context of Schooling
  • Involves techniques of teaching
  • Scaffolding learning Engagment, Building
    Knowledge, Transformation, Presentation and
    Reflection.
  • Zone of Proximal Development the way in which
    through good teaching can take a student from
    there current level to a level much higher a
    level that is very challenging to the learner but
    is within the learners grasp.

Conclusion
  • Discourse Communities, Socio-cultural Approaches
    to Language and Learning and the Context in
    Schooling all intertwine and work together to
    achieve one common purpose which is to allow us
    to learn the many purposes of language.
