A Safe Elevator
  • In 1852 Elisha Graves Otis built a safe elevator.
  • It had a safety brake to stop the elevator even
    if the ropes broke.
  • If the cable did break a hook would hook in
    toothed guide rails and the elevator would hang
    so the people could get out of the elevator.

Facts About Elisha Otis!
  • Elisha Otis was an inventor who worked at the
    Bedstead Factory of O. Tingley and Company.
  • Elisha Otis was born on a farm near Halifax. He
    was born August 3,1811. Elisha Otis died on April
    8,1861.
  • He spent 3 years trying to think of an invention
    and one day he heard about the cables braking on
    elevators and invented the safety brake.
