Title: USPG Powerpoint Presentation
1The Well is Deep The work of the Anglican Church
in Ghana USPG Lent Appeal 2010
2Welcome to Ghana, in West Africa. Ghana is often
held up as a model for democratic political
reform in Africa.
3To date, Ghana is the only country in Africa that
has received a visit from US President Barack
Obama.
4Obama visited Cape Coast Castle, which was used
by the British to hold slaves before they left
for the Americas.
5Ghana is the worlds second largest exporter of
cocoa. The country also has major untapped
offshore oil reserves.
6Two-thirds of the population are Christian 16
Muslim. The faith communities live side by side
in peace.
7Ghana is a developing country. In places there is
poverty and malnutrition, and poor access to
healthcare facilities.
8Patients at a USPG-supported health centre. The
Anglican Church in Ghana is responding to local
needs.
9The church runs eye clinics. Here a USPG
volunteer helps at the Bishop Ackon Memorial Eye
Centre, in Cape Coast.
10The Mampong Babies Home, in Kumasi, is saving
the lives of abandoned and orphaned children.
11This is Gloria. Malaria, measles and other
illnesses mean one in ten children do not reach
their fifth birthday.
12The home looks after 40 children at a time. They
are put into the care of extended family at five
years old.
13The church is campaigning against human
trafficking. Some children are forced to work in
the fishing industry.
14The environment is a concern. USPG funded the
Diocese of Kumasi to re-plant land ravaged by
bush fires.
15Many of Ghanas schools are basic. The Anglican
Church is supporting education, with help from
USPG.
16A need for more church workers is being addressed
by St Nicholas Seminary, in Cape Coast.
17Lovia Owusu-Asiedu, 61, decided to train for the
priesthood. She hopes to minister to marginalised
rural congregations.
18Elijah Yakubu, 33, is a teacher by day. He also
works as a voluntary catechist (lay worker)
supporting his local priest.
19The Rt Revd Daniel Sarfo, Bishop of
Kumasi Mission is the basis of the church. It
is the mission of God and we are participating in
it...
20Wherever the church is it must have an impact
on society socially, physically, spiritually
and morally. We have a lot to do!
21Please pray for the Anglican Church in Ghana this
Lent.
22USPG urgently needs your gifts of money, time and
prayer to enable the world church to share Gods
love.
