Title: Security Privacy

1
Security Privacy
  • Frank Muniz
  • MGS 3040
  • Chapter 11

2
  • Organizations have legal requirements to protect
    customer data.
  • Has the government tried to protect the privacy
    of the consumer?
  • GGramm-Leach-Bliley (GLB) Act was passed by
congress in 1999. This act protected consumers
financial data stored by financial institutions.

3
The Privacy Act of 1974
  • Provides protection to individuals whose records
are maintained by the US government.
  • No agency shall disclose any record which is
contained in a system of records by any means of
communication to any person, or to another
agency, except pursuant to a written request by,
or with the prior written consent of, the
individual to whom the record pertains....

4
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act
  • This act was passed in 1996, and gave individuals
the right to access health data created by
doctors and other health care providers.
  • Also sets rules and limits on who can read and
    receive a persons health information.

5
Privacy in Other Countries?
  • Privacy laws in other countries are much more
    strict than in the US.
  • Some countries, like Australia, privacy acts not
only protect data from the government and health
    care, but also from businesses.

6
Exempt Companies
  • Companies such as Dell, Continental, Amazon.com
etc do not have a legal requirement to protect
the data of their costumers, because neither one
of the 3 acts mentioned before applies to them.
  • Even though this may not apply to those
companies, consumers still feel that their
privacy is very important, and that every company
should be forced to keep their customers
    information safe.
