Title: Cinderella Variations Research Project

1
Cinderella Variations Research Project
  • Mrs. Bishops class

2
Why are we doing this project?
  • As you all know, we have been reading several
different variations of the Cinderella story in
    our class.
  • Which one has been your favorite?
  • Why?

3
Why are we doing this project?
  • While some of the variations have used animals,
or even flowers as the main characters, many of
them have been about people from other countries
    and cultures.
  • Can you all name a few of those cultures?

4
Why are we doing this project?
  • We are going to take the time to research several
of the different cultures that we have been
reading about in order to increase our knowledge
    about those other cultures.
  • Why is it important to know about people in other
    cultures?

5
Step One
  • The first step for this project will be getting
into small groups. I have assigned you all to
small groups based upon my knowledge of which
    people work well together.
  • Once you meet in your group, you will be assigned
a culture. These cultures include China, Japan,
    France, India, and Africa.

6
A note
  • It is important to know that just as in America
there are many different cultures, so in other
countries there may be many different cultures.
  • However, for the purposes of simplicity in
research, we will talk about the country or
    continent as a whole.
  • It is often not wise to generalize
characteristics to a whole group of people. This
can lead to misunderstanding. Can you all think
of an example where this might happen?

7
Step Two
  • Once you are in your groups, you will find a
packet of materials related to your culture.
  • Look over those materials, and find the aspects
of the culture that look most interesting to you.
These may include food, religion, arts, family
life, housing, etc If your topic is not listed
here, OK it with me first.
  • Once you have each decided on one topic of the
culture to research, you will begin your work.

8
Step Three
  • We will be going to the computer lab for the
    first part of our research.
  • You will be asked to use a search engine on the
computer to find several facts about your
country, and to note the websites from whence
    they came.
  • You will also be asked to use the online
    encyclopedia to find several facts.

9
Step Four
  • Once you have gathered four or five different
facts about your aspect of the culture, get
together with your group and discuss your
    findings.
  • Finally, organize your information into a power
point document, to be presented to the class.
  • We will have a specific lesson on using power
    point later this week.

10
Step Five
  • Multicultural Celebration!
  • Each group will make their presentation.
  • Each group should begin by reading or acting out
the Cinderella variation from their culture, and
then making their presentation to the class.
  • We will then listen to multicultural music, and
    have a fun food festival!

11
In Conclusion
  • Following this unit, you will be asked to write a
short essay on word describing what you learned
from this project. You may include things you
liked about the project, and things you would
    change about the project.
