Title: How Sound Travels
1How Sound Travels
Sound travels in the shape of waves which move
out in all directions from the source of the
sound.

2Sound Travels in All Directions
Just like when you throw a stone in a pond and
the waves go out all around where the stone went
into the water, so sound travels in all
directions from its source.
3Sound Pushes the Air
When you hit a drum the air next to the drum gets
pushed tightly together. When the air relaxes,
it pushes the air next to it and so on.
4The Sound Reaches Your Ear
The sound keeps pushing the air all the way to
your ear where it pushes against your eardrum and
you hear the sound.
5High and Low Sound Waves
When the sound waves are closer together, the
sound is higher. When the sound waves are
further apart the sound is lower.
6Loud and Soft Sound Waves
When the waves are tall the sound is loud!
When the waves are short the sound is soft.

8Columns of Air
When the air in a container gets shorter, the
sound gets higher. What happens when the air gets
longer?
high
low
9Strings
Long strings make low sounds. What kind of sound
will a short string make?
