2Giovanni da Verrazano
- Verrazano was an Italian explorer hired by the
King of France Francis 1. - The King of France hired Verrazano because he
wanted someone to explore North America and look
for the passage to the East. - He sailed from North Carolina to New Foundland.
3 When he went up to New York Bay he said This
is a fine deep water harbor.
He was the first European to have contact with
the Indians.
On his 3rd journey he sailed to the West Indies
and was eaten by cannibals. The King was sorry
for his fate.
4Jacques Cartier
- After Verrazano died the King asked Jacques
Cartier to explore the cost of North America. - When he sailed to New Foundland he saw English
and Spanish fishing fleets. - Cartier didnt explore the Gulf of St. Lawrence
because he thought it was a bay.
5 When he came back to France he didnt stay long
before he went back to North America for the 2nd
time.
In the winter most of his men died he thought
he would never make it back to France.
But in the spring they made it back to France.
6 When Cartier returned to North America for the
3rd time the king wanted some of the land in
North America so he sent prisoners.
For the rest of Cartiers days he stayed in North
America exploring.
7Samuel de Champlain
- The first places Champlain explored were Main,
and Nova Scotia. - The first settlement he founded was in Nova
Scotia witch is in Canada.
8The Fur Trade
- France traded fur to make it richer.
- The fur was rare because you had to go to North
America to get it. - Rene-Robert Cavelier went down the Mississippi
River looking for fur and clamed all land drained
by the Mississippi for the King of France.
