  • Mission Statement We will work toward the
    elimination of violence and oppression against
    women and their children and provide emergency
    and support services for victims/survivors of
    domestic violence.
  • Philosophy We believe that gender inequity and
    the resulting power imbalance in our culture play
    a central role in creating a society which allows
    the abuse of women. We are committed to a vision
    of a just society, and to changing the current
    beliefs and institutions which encourage violence
    against women.

Target Population
  • Any individual experiencing abuse in a domestic
    violence situation.
  • The majority of the clients are impoverished
    women and their children. Although, their are
    clients from every social economic class.
  • Men DO come to the Open Gate for services and
    shelter.

What does the DVS do?
  • Crisis Intervention 24 hours a day

    Adopt a Grandparent, NHC Jail, Police Training,

Practicum Opportunities
  • Direct Services Shadow advocate for victims of
    domestic violence and their children.
  • Direct Services with Shelter Shadow shelter
    director in direct services with clients and
    their children in the shelter. This would include
    assisting with safety plans, goal plans, teaching
    financial management, and anything that would
    assist the women to be able to independently live
    in society without the abuser.
  • Childrens Advocacy Shadow the Childrens
    program coordinator. Assist with children portion
    of weekly support groups on Tuesday and Wednesday
    evenings and other special programs.
  • Court Advocacy Shadow the court advocate in a
    direct service atmosphere and anything in regards
    to DV protective orders including going to court
    to support the women.
  • Outreach Shadow the outreach coordinator with
    programs such as Hands Are Not For Hitting,
    STARS, NHC Jail, weekly empowerment groups on
    Tuesday evenings.
