Multimedia home server systems
4TA8 Multimedia home server systems
- Established in May, 2002
- Background
- Growing Terrestrial Digital TV Broadcast
- Growing PVR (Private Video Recorder)
- Homeserver-based Broadcast Service Introduction
- Activities up to now
- U Conceptual Model of Homeserver
- DF-based removable recording format
- API for removable media
- DRM (Newly started)
5Homeserver-based Broadcast Services
- Store contents in a large capacity storage
- Access control at the time accessing the stored
contents, including DRM - Sophisticated services using Meta Data,EPG,

11Issues to be Solved for DTV- Reasonable Copy
Protection -
- Heavy restrictions in Japan
- No duplication only move allowed
- Contents on a removable media playable only on
authorized players - Light weight restrictions in U.S.
- Broadcast flag permits fair use copy

13MPEG-2/4 IPMP Outline
- International Standard for Intellectual Property
Management Protection for MPEG Audio Visual
contents - Basic concept is an architecture for secure
coordination framework for IPMP tools. - Various CA/DRM tools (Authentication,
Encryption/Decryption, Watermarking, etc.) can be
applied - Tools are managed via IPMP Control Graph and
handled as Blackbox.
14MPEG-2/4 IPMP Status
- Not widely used in current mass market
- Markets in which MPEG-2/4 AV contents are widely
used already have its own simple CA/DRM related
mechanism. - DVD
- Digital Broadcast
- AV clip for 3G mobile phone
- Reasonable DRM implementation example required to
enlarge market size and to reduce equipment cost

15Home Network History
- Access network
- External PSTN modem
- Internal PSTN modem
- External ADSL modem/FTTH converter
- Internal ADSL modem ?How about FTTH converter ?
- Cable modem stay independently
- In-house network
- No practical network at home until recently
-1394 replacement of RCA pin jack - Very few WLAN audio streaming
- Very few modem/printer/storage sharing
- The situation is changing

- TS 62318 Home server conceptual model
- P62328 Interchangeable volume/file
structure adaptation for
broadcasting receiver - PT61925 The vocabulary of home server
18TA8 activities (2) Interchangeable volume/file
structure adaptation for broadcasting receivers
- This standard defines the volume and file
structure required for interchanging multimedia
data of a home server/broadcasting receiver,
which consists of an AV stream with multiple
associated objects. - Part 1 General description and architecture
- Part 2 General recording structure
- Part 3 Broadcasting system specific recording
structure - ISDB
Specifications for other country/region are
expected to be proposed.

21Closing Remarks
- Home server/network-related TC100 activities were
introduced. - PC is now leading the home network withnetwork
media player. - Broadcasting services based on home server will
drive gateway function between in-house network
and access network. - DRM is the key issue for A/V network deployment.
