Open Access How to sort
43Benefits What advantages are there of using
Access to sort data?
44Data Handling Database software
- You are going to find out more about the United
Nations and a number of countries around the
world and then set up a database that can be used
to store some of the information you find. The
database will let you compare the lives of people
living in the different countries. - Use the Internet to find out the following
information - What year was the United Nations formed?
- Why was it formed?
- Which 5 Countries have permanent seats on the
Security Council? - What are Under Developed Countries?
45Collecting Data (www.cyberbus.com)
Why use a code for the continent? What is a
disadvantage of using a code like this?
46Database Structure
- 3a. Use MS Access to set up a database that has
the following structure
3b Explain what the information being collected
in the following fields means Population
Density . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Unemployment Rate . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . Infant Mortality . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . Which types of countries do you
think will have the highest rate for infant
mortality? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Why? . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
47Your Printouts
- Type in the details about each of the countries
you wrote in your data collection table -
- (i) Produce a printout showing all the countries
in your database. - (ii) Sort the records in your database into
alphabetical order of country and print out all
the records in your database in the new order. - (iii) Search your database to find all of the
countries that have an infant mortality rate
greater than ?? and print out their details. - (iv) Sort the records in your database into
Infant Mortality order and printout only - the Infant Mortality, Unemployment,
country and Continent only. - What does the printout for question 4 tell you?
- Extension Work Produce printouts showing other
sorts and searches of your database. Use your
database to produce graphs showing some of this
information.
48YEAR 7 ICT SKILLS
- By the end of this Database unit you should be
able to.. - DB1 Set up database ?
- DB2 Edit database ?
- DB3 Sort database ?
- DB4 Use simple database searches ?
- DB5 Use complex database searches ?
49Task 5a Spreadsheet software
50Using Excel to calculate the points for the
Tennis Club
- Using the on the previous slide, construct a
spreadsheet that will calculate the current
number of points for each team in the top part of

annotate it to show the spreadsheet formulae you
used. -
- In the next round of matches
- - Canterbury beat Medway

drawn. -
- 3. Update your spreadsheet to include these
results and print out the table sorted into
points order - i.e. with the team that has the most points at
the top of the table.
51 Questions - Spreadsheets
- 1. Underline the spreadsheet formulae shown below
that you think are incorrect and write the
correct versions next to them. - A4B12 SUM(B4B12) A4B12 SUM(B4-B12)
-
- B12/A4 B1235 SUM(B4D12) SUM(B3B5B7)
- B5-D17 D12/2
