Title: NLCTA Operations and Maintenance

1
NLCTA Operations and Maintenance
  • NLCTA has been off since October 11, 2004.
  • Our restart plan (see NLCTA safety web) was
submitted ? Directorate Friday, March 25
  • It includes ISMS for the group
  • All ESB activities are coordinated in a daily
    730 AM meeting
  • Operation of the CERN structure (recently
installed) and vacuum tests of the X-band
structures will resume as soon as the restart
    validation is complete
  • This will be hard (now underway at MCC)
  • Maintenance work has been focused on safety items
  • Electrical labeling
  • Ladders
  • Posting

2
E 163
  • E 163 is the laser-plasma wake experiment
    spearheaded by Bob Siemann
  • This is the largest on-going effort in ESB at
    present
  • An ultra-short pulse RF photocathode gun will be
installed in the next few weeks.
  • T-gun will be removed and mothballed
  • 1 GigaW class laser installation now underway
  • Beam from the gun in the next few months
  • Users welcome, as always.
  • NLCTA Goals 2005 Safety, ISMS, Safety, ISMS,
    Safety

3
ATF
  • Program
  • Damping Ring Beam dynamics studies
  • Extraction line Instrumentation
  • Preparation for ATF2
  • Kicker Development
  • Goals
  • 1 pm-rad e_y sub micron extracted beam stability
  • Extracted channel coupling correction (prevent 3x
    y emittance growth)
  • Orbit response / ring coupling residual
    vertical dispersion
  • Collective effects study (CSR / FBII)
  • Wiggler effects

4
Instrumentation
  • Cavity BPMs lt 10 nm resolution (1e-6 BPM
radius), 100 nm long term offset / gain control
    (energy spectrometer) ? UK
  • ATF-2 cavity BPM electronics (US/Japan)
  • Laserwire 1 um scans, fast multi-bunch scanning,
    1 resolution prototype ? UK
  • Optical stabilization 10 20 nm intra-beamline
component stabilization at DC alignment tests ?
    UK
  • Fast feedback (FONT) extremely low latency
feedback digital feedback prototype ? UK
  • Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (DR) ? incoming
    Sokendai graduate student/KEK
  • Ring BPM upgrade reduce resolution from 34 to
    0.2 um (funded through US/Japan)

5
US/UK/KEK ATF team
  • By institutional nationality
  • 12 Japan, 12 UK, 4 US
  • ( part of the group)

6
TTF
  • Program Learn how to design, build and run a
    cryogenic linac
  • LOLA transverse deflecting structure crab
to measure 10 micron bunch structure accurately
    at 400 MeV
  • Installed 09.03 and commissioned w/o beam 01.04
  • Goals 2005
  • Full power commissioning (20 MW)
  • Synchronization to ltlt 1 ps
  • Multi-stage compressor optimization
  • Software, controls and phase stabilization
    systems
  • LOLA is now (02.05) producing images at ½ power
  • 11.04 trip failed due to poor understanding/manage
    ment of synchronization system
  • Collaboration with DESY funded by DESY through
    FEL RD agreement (02).

7
TTF (2)
  • Cavity higher order mode beam monitoring
  • Goals 2005
  • measure beam position using a few modes to 1
    um resolution
  • Test cryomodule internal construction process
with differential accuracy 100 um, using a
    family of modes
  • Analysis of cavity fabrication errors using HOM
  • Show that HOM can be used as BPMs for the XFEL /
    LC with excellent performance
  • Possible cost reduction / increased precision for
    LC linac instrumentation
  • Initial results (11.04 15 um resolution with
    single mode pair)
  • Scaled performance 15 um / 70000 um is good
first study result (compare with FFTB best 1 um
    / 24000)

8
Kicker Replacement
  • ATF extraction kicker pair replacement with
    SLAC NDR-style system
  • Purpose
  • Reduce pressure in ring (avg by 2x)
  • More stable kick similar to installed ATF
    injection kicker
  • Extend pulse length to 300 ns for ILC bunch
    spacing-related studies
  • Goal 2005
  • Install, test and commission 2 used SLC kickers
with a full SLC NDR extractor system
  • Ready for ATF operation 24.10.2005
  • Modified to run 2 kickers in parallel as needed
with the double kicker compensation scheme
  • Modified to support 5 times longer pulse

9
Kicker Replacement (2)
  • Two kicker magnets found subsequently released
    by Accelerator Department
  • (deemed unusable for PEP)
  • Were used and removed in early-mid 1990s
  • Tested, now in MFD for mod.
  • (the kicker system is unforgiving of errors and
must be treated with respect and care)
  • Test pulser (B015) released from AD and now in
mod to drive 2 magnets and support 300 ns pulse
  • Stand-down has slowed us a bit testing to begin
    in a few weeks.
  • Kicker system HV safety requires a few new
    procedures
  • This project is entirely funded through US/Japan
  • (as was injector installation in 12.1996)

10
PEP II
  • Program Provide help as requested by SLAC
    Director (late 03)
  • (not on the agenda, but an important goal for
2004 ? extended into this year)
  • Two major systems installed
  • LER X-ray Synchrotron Radiation monitor
  • Goal measure beam size accurately in LER up to
full intensity without tilt distortion present
    in existing monitors
  • Smallest measurable beam size 10 um, well below
    smallest expected LER sigma_y
  • Bunch by bunch beam size for EC measurements
  • X-ray technology extremely important for ILC DR
    monitors

11
PEP II (2)
  • Beam Based Alignment
  • LER BPM offsets / misalignments in IR2 region are
    extreme arcs important but
  • Installed 32 shunts from SPEAR BBA possible on
    61 magnets
  • Installation completed 16.03.2005
  • Quad string operation started 24.03.2005
  • Shunts tested ok
  • Goal 2005 BBA understanding of LER BPM
systematics IR misalignments to lt100 um
  • HER BBA resulted in significant Luminosity
    improvement through dispersion correction
  • Ring BBA is extremely important for ILC DR / ATF
