Title: Plagiarism
1Plagiarism
2Plagiarism is CHEATING! It is a serious enough
kind of cheating that it can result in your being
expelled from college.
3Plagiarism is . . .
- Quoting (using the authors actual words) but not
giving credit to the author.
4Plagiarism is . . .
- Paraphrasing (changing some of the authors
words) without giving credit to the author.
5Plagiarism is . . .
- Summarizing (condensing the authors words or
ideas that are not general knowledge or public
domain) without giving credit to the author.
6How to avoid plagiarism . . .
- Use quotation marks if the material is quoted.
- Give the author credit in in notes in the body
of the report. - List the authors work in the REFERENCES section.
7LHS Cheating Policy Cheating/plagiarism in any
form is not allowed at La Grande High School.
Cheating can include, but is not limited to,
obtaining and giving information during a test by
secret or public means, copying and/or
duplicating another persons work. In all cases,
students are to do his/her own work. Plagiarism
is copying another persons work and claiming it
as ones own. The following steps will be
enforced in regards to cheating/plagiarism
8- The instructor makes the determination
(observation is sufficient) that cheating has
occurred. - The student and instructor will discuss the issue
in a timely manner. - The student will receive no credit on the
assignment or test. - The teacher will notify the parent-guardian and
an administrator of the incident. - A conference to discuss the matter will be
arranged if so desired by the administrator or
parent-guardian. - A second offense in the same course will result
in a parent-notification by the teacher and an
administrator will remove the student from class
with a final grade of F (LHS Student Handbook,
2007).
9- Plagiarism is cheating, and cheating is
wrongwhether or not you get caught!
10Another issue What about papers that are mostly
made up of quoteseven if they have quotation
marks and in notes? If you have quotation marks
and in notes, you are not plagiarizing, BUT . .
. A position paper should have a mix of research
and opinion. But when it comes to quotes, a
paper shouldnt have more than 20 of its volume
in quotes (even if theyre referenced correctly).
