Causes of Air Pollution

• The combustion of gas in cars, trucks, and jet
  airplanes produces pollutants as well as
  particulates, mostly lead. In sunlight, nitrogen
  oxides combine with hydrocarbons to form a
  secondary class of pollutants among them ozone.
  Nitrogen oxides also react with oxygen in the air
  to form nitrogen dioxide, a foul-smelling brown
  gas. In urban areas like Los Angeles where
  transportation is the main cause of air
  pollution, nitrogen dioxide tints the air to
  produce brown smog. Although the use of catalytic
  converters has reduced smog-producing compounds
  in motor vehicle exhaust emissions, recent
  studies have shown that in so doing the
  converters produce nitrous oxide, which
  contributes substantially to global warming.

Solution

• A solution to this problem that I came up with is
  an opposite of the hybrid engine that would be
  used for heavier vehicles. Because an electric
  engine would not be strong enough for either a
  bus or a semi truck. The electric motor could be
  used for semis on the highway just to keep the
  truck moving and not be used in stop in go
  traffic. Also semis could have a solar panel on
  top of the cab to charge the electric motor while
  is use or not.
