23What do candidates say?
In the beginning, it was difficult understanding
what was required and finding the right sort of
evidence. Ive got a grown up family and its
been ages since Ive done any studying. However,
Andrea and Mike from the Local Land Charges
Institutes assessment centre are very helpful.
Mike came and explained to me all about the NVQ
and Andrea never minds if I ring her up for
advice. I often send her a part-completed unit
and she tells me what extra evidence it needs.
The NVQ has helped me learn more about my job
and position. During my first year in local land
charges we were very busy and I didnt really get
structured training. The NVQ has helped me to dig
in, ask questions, look and learn. Its been
pretty straightforward.
I set myself a target to finish my NVQ before I
left to go on a trip, and I met my target. I
couldnt have done it without the help of my
colleagues who shouldered some of my work to give
me time to type up my storyboards and prepare my
evidence. I did try taking it home to work on,
but theres not much you can do at home apart
from typing up your notes. You have to be in the
office to find the evidence you need. That was my
greatest problem finding where Id filed a
piece of valuable evidence!
24What do their managers say?
Great for helping people develop new skills,
such as letter-writing, improving customer
service and working better in the team. Team
members help each other with their evidence and
have to work on projects which involve other
people from the council and members.
I have been able to get funding for the training
and NVQs by showing how it links to their PDPR
and to wider initiatives like Investors in People
and Best Value.
The NVQ is a really useful tool for finding out
peoples knowledge and skills during recruitment
and planning the training they need when they are
appointed.
Its very important that we can say not only that
we hold the Charter Mark but also that every
member of the team is qualified to a professional
standard. This adds to the our credibility and
prestige and is also important for promoting the
section across the authority.
For a youngster who is ambitious to progress in
Local Land Charges, the NVQ makes them much more
attractive in a limited job market. There are
only 410 of us heads of Local Land Charges
sections around so competition is likely to be
fierce.
